Total Time = 4h 46m 48s
Overall Rank = 181/1544
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 29/125
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:15am and began the process...actually tested out the new goggles in the sink to ensure they would lek too bad since time ran short on Saturday and I couldn't swim. We hit the road right around 4:00am and headed to Cambridge. The ride was fine and actually gave us some time to wake up and think a bit before transition.
When we arrived we found a nice place to park and ate some breakfast. I had an Ensure, a Multigrain bagel from DD, a banana, and some coffee. I skipped the 2nd Ensure for today.

Event warmup:

Walked over and got marked up and headed over to my bike to begin the set-up process. A bit different today b/c of the event distance which had me doing some different things compared to an Olympic.
The rest of the set-up and preperation was pretty consistent but did take me right up to the end.
I did jump in the water at the swim exit for a quick "loosen up" swim and was stung by a jelly fish -- the sting subsided while we watched the Pro's and early groups exit the swim.
Put the suit on and headed over.
Swim
  • 28m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just a little disappointed in my swim performance. It's not based on time or finishing place rather the way I feel in the water. It seems to me that I have a very difficult time transfering my ability to swim well in a pool into the open water. I've had 1 great open water swim in all of my races and I'm trying to get it back.
What would you do differently?:

Train a bit different when swimming open water throughout training.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Just need to get the wetsuit off and helmet on much quicker. Also, after talking with Ricardo I may try and have my shoes already clipped in and begin practicing that method. He feels it would help me out in transition. Plus, I feel like I am pretty good riding on top of my shoes and getting in and out of them at other times.
What would you do differently?:

Just continue to improve and not over think things.
Bike
  • 2h 26m 48s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.89 mile/hr
Comments:

I am very pleased with my performance/effort on the bike today!
I came into the race wanting to average 23mph and that is basically what I did. Once Kendro passed me I made the decision to ride with that group as long as I could and push hard through some discomfort at times to see what I could do. It was great!!! Once we hit mile 35-40 I just couldn't push through the wind and I fell back - just didn't have the power to maintain a 21+ avg. and hope to have anything left on the run. All things considered I can't be the least bit upset with my bike performance.
What would you do differently?:

The only possible thing would have been to push a bit more early on knowing the last 15-20 miles were going to be as slow as they were.
Transition 2
  • 03m 5s
Comments:

This transition was slow...extremely slow! Mostly due to not being sure of what to take and where to put it. I ended up taking the Enduralytes, gels and Perpetuem in the flask. Problem is I was fumbling around and figuring where I should keep it.
What would you do differently?:

IMPROVE!!!
Continue to plan things out a bit better!

Run
  • 1h 46m 24s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, once again the run is the thorn in my side. He thing is that I can't be disappointed in this run at all. I haven't run and put in the necessary milage to feel like I could hae performed any better. Considering I've only logged a few 10-mile runs throughout training I'm actually fairly pleased it wasn't slower. All that said - as a competitor I really hate not being able to put together a run that gives me an opportunity to compete a bit more with my age group. I hate seeing all those 30-34's running by me.
What would you do differently?:

Train and become a better runner!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a bit and eventually had a recovery drink followed up by some food from the post race festivities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training!!!

Event comments:

Really enjoyed my first Eagleman experience!!!
Look forward to returning and hopefully improving!
