Redondo Beach, California
United States
TC Tri Productions, LLC
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 54s
Overall Rank = 313*/415
Age Group = Clyde
Age Group Rank = 25/37
Pre-race routine:

Graduated from UCLA with my Ed.D. the night before.
Got up at 4am and rallied my brother, father, and 2 year-old son to come with... drove 80 miles to Redondo.
Event warmup:

1/2 mile jog, 100 yard swim, stretch.
Swim
  • 20m 17s
  • 879 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Higher intensity in pool swimming to account for the 20+ BPM I was running for the same splits.
More OWS.
Transition 1
  • 05m 8s
Comments:

I was so winded from swim, then I had to run up the hill to transition.
I really think that they can add 1/4-1/2 mile to overall distance of Tri for the runs to transition.

I could have shaved a minute with better conditioning and doing nothing differently.
Bike
  • 25m 52s
  • 6 miles
  • 13.92 mile/hr
Comments:

I totally dogged the bike.
By the time that I recovered from the swim, I was scared of the run from my previous Tri.

I ALMOST HIT A 90 YEAR-OLD LADY USING A WALKER TO CROSS COURSE WITH NO VOLUNTEERS IN SIGHT!
What would you do differently?:

Conditioning.
More work on higher cadences, more than one good bike per week.
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

Still slow due to conditioning
What would you do differently?:

Set-up area more efficiently (need to get there sooner before the space hogs).
Conditioning would have given me 30 seconds to a minute with no additional effort.
Run
  • 19m 35s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

This is a PR for my run (even training runs).
On one hand, I really trained my running more.
On the other, I totally took it too easy on the bike.
I felt great at the beginning.Passed over 6, was passed by only 1.
Had some troubles with the stink behind the Chinese seafood place.
at about 1.5 miles, I got a really bad stitch that made it tough to take full breaths. Volunteers and fans really helped me finish, Thanks!
What would you do differently?:

Not taken the bike out so easily.
Keep working my running.
Keep practicing shorter strides and higher cadences.
Post race
Warm down:

2-300 yard walk with good stretch.
Walked area with my son.
Played on beach with son.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall conditioning.
SLOW transitions.
Poor bike prep.
Need more OWS experience.

Event comments:

It is Redondo Beach.
I liked the long swim.
They need more volunteers on the bike course!
I ALMOST HIT A 90 YEAR-OLD LADY USING A WALKER TO CROSS COURSE WITH NO VOLUNTEERS IN SIGHT!

This is my second Tri, so I can be more critical than "I survived".

I learned that, although I am a good pool swimmer, I need more OWS.
I need more bike TITS.
Keep working on my running and overall conditioning.

*Note: I could not see my name on the overall results (because I raced as clyde?) My Overall result is based on where my time would have fallen.

My next goal is to go from the 33-34th percentile to being in the 60-70th percentile.

Good job!  sorry I missed you out there....

Where was the 90 year old lady (if you recall)?

Lots of times (don't know why) they don't include clydes/athenas in the overall AG results.  Kinda sucks

It was right at the 90 degree turn that is before/after the 180' turn and the straightaway.

There were a lot of volunteers by the 2nd 90', but there were already cops there.

I was the clyde sporting the BT TriTop and black Jammers. (6'3" 235lbs).
