Wasa Lake, British Columbia
Canada
RM Events
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 44m 8s
Overall Rank = 313/504
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 25/31
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00 a.m. Breakfast of PB on bagel. Couple of glasses of OJ. At the lake by 6:15 so as to get a close parking space.
Event warmup:

Some light stretching on shore. Swam out 50 meters and back before start.
Swim
  • 25h 00m
  • 1500 meters
  • 1h 40m / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt like a good pace but even before the race I looked out at the course and thought it looked shorter than normal. Learned afterwards that it was a shortened course (by how much I do not know). But happy with my swim - I kept relaxed and each time I sighted I seemed to be keeping in line. Time includes a 200 meter run up from the beach to T1.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

T1 split is included in my bike time but I kept track of it on my watch. Yes I'm slow in transition - but hey - today was all about celebrating the fact that I can run/train pretty much pain free (I missed doing any tris last year due to nagging back and calf injuries).
Bike
  • 1h 22m 13s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.19 km/hr
Comments:

Time here includes T1 and T2. My bike computer says 1:18:48 which might include about 30 seconds of run with the bike inside transition. Yes - I picked one of the furthest locations from the bike exit - I figured I'm not trying to podium so leave those spots to those who are.

Ideal race conditions - mostly flat course with little to no wind. Certainly was flying at times.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more (see run later).

Need to spend more time down on the aero bars. I was only in them maybe half the time if that. Wanted to stay relaxed.

Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I missed timing T2.
What would you do differently?:

Turn on my Garmin after the swim so that it was synched up with the satelites when I started the run.
Run
  • 56m 57s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 42s  min/km
Comments:

Kind of disappointed with my run. First 2 km I went out at a 5 minute per km pace (decent) but from 4 km on I had to take walk breaks just about every km. I felt mentally defeated and my body temp felt like it was rising. (Air temp had also heated up by this point). I know now that I didn't drank enough on the bike (only drank about 12 ounces of water...).
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike portion and do longer bike rides and runs so that I am used to 2 + hours of physical exertion.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inadequate liquid consumption on the bike. Lack of training for such length of time.

Event comments:

Overall I am quite happy with having been able to train and race mostly pain free. I would race Wasa lake again - very nice course and well organized.

Great job Steve. I'm sure you are so happy to be back in the swing of racing again.  Do you think you'll do another Tri this year?
