St. Anthony's
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 36m 30s
Overall Rank = 782/3000
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 60/134
Pre-race routine:

Packed night before. Woke up at 4:15. Got dressed. Had 1 cup of coffee, bottle of 'green goodness' fruit juice, clif bar. Got in car and went to race site.
Event warmup:

Not much of one. A bit brisk, jogged around a bit to warm up, stretched. Setup T area, walked 3/4 mile to swim start.
Swim
  • 25m 24s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Try to draft off the faster group a bit better. They got away before I got free of the main pack. Found one fast group towards the end, but lost them when we hit some traffic.

Felt like I could have swum a little faster, but happy with my result.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

T area just big. Took a while to get through it.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 42s
  • 25 miles
  • 21.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was good. A lot flatter than what I'm used to.

Apparently I drafted someone, which is utterly bogus but WTF can I do about it. Lots of sharp turns, 3000 people, and it happens. When a pack passes you, with riders pulling in front of you, riders to your left, riders behind, and curb to your right, what precisely are you supposed to do when you see the official motorbike coming past and scribbling in her little notebook. F(*% that.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster.

Develop a forceshield around me so I don't get bogus drafting penalties, other than that, not a damn thing except go faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Got a bit hung up putting on socks. Transition area just long. :)
Run
  • 54m 41s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Apparently my AG is just effing fast. :) I'm in top 1/4 overall but barely top 1/2 of my AG, and as the bottom end of the run scale.

Went good though, since I reset my running in Feb, when I switched to Pose. This is my longest ( distance ) run to date since then. And it matches my PR standalone 10k from last summer, so defintely will be faster as I get more miles under me.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Post race daze. Got water. Walked around for about 10 minutes. Stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training. Not much. I'm about 15min PR over my best time last year. Good way to start to season, and things are just gonna get better from here.

Stupid 2:00 drafting penalty.

Event comments:

I'll definitely do this again.

I'm pissed about the drafting penalty. I saw the lady write in her book as she zoomed by, so I know exactly where it happened, and BS if I was drafting. The pack that caught and eventually passed me sure were riding awfully close together too, so hopefully they all got dinged too, so that it's fair.

Nice race Chris!  You are just the tri traveling guy!

Bummer about the penalty....and you aren't kidding that your AG is fast!  With your times, I figured you'd be in the top 25% (that is supposed to make you feel good, no matter how it sounds!).

Great race, very impressive!

Chris,

You kicked ass on the swim and the bike. 21 mph av. Wow. You rock. That freakin' sucks about the draft penalty though. You'd think with that many people they'd give some slack with a pack and all. What gives? But you did freakin' phenomonal man. I'm so proud of you. You stepped up your training and it really really shows. Congrats. You Rock.

Chris - you rock!  Congrats on the 15+ min PR - how better to start the season?  Nice, nice, nice.  That's an excellent result, no matter how you skin it.  The 21+ on the bike is so impressive...and, other than the bogus penalty and the subtleties of racing with several thousand of your friends, it looks like your routine was spot-on - nutrition, drinking, transitions, etc.  Great result, great effort!

Yeah, I guess you did okay. It was great meeting you and glad we all got to hang out for a while. I'm impressed w/ your times! Yeah, there were tons of USAT officials riding around on the bike course. You just got unlucky. I heard there were like 200 penalties. I thought I might have gotten one, but I didn't. Anyways, have a safe trip back to Chicago. See ya!

Dude, you're a freggin stud!  No joke.

Your MTB days are shining through!  (Which reminds me, Mary and I rode together today and we were talking about you because she was so impressed with how you were able to fix a chain drop while still riding your bike.)

I was gonna have a gentleman's competition at Racine with you this year to motivate both of us to train harder...but after seeing your splits at this race....I'm not gonna do it because I only make a bet with people when I know I can win ....

Anyway, back to your race.  What a great swim time.  BP's work with you has REALLY paid off.  Excellent job!

You make me jealous...

Great job on the race. I wish we could have stayed around tonight but had to bet back. I saw a lot of people not following rules. Too bad about the penalty. I thought they had me at one time when a guy had just passed and pulled in front of me. When I looked over the motorcycle was right next to me!

That sucks!! Hope to see you at another race in FL!

Great job.  I'd love a 25 minute swim.  Bike was hard.  I'm surprised there were only 200 penalties.  Bikes were all over the road with no clear area to maneuver.  Congrats on the huge PR.

I really enjoyed meeting you.  This weekend was one of the best experiencees I've ever had.

A solid race and a great bike time. Sorry to hear about the penalty, doesn't seem right when you're busting your butt to do your best and get dinged like that. Next year you'll be leading the pack and avoid the threat!

Good job...I think there was plenty of drafting probably not penalized, hard to avoid some of the "packs" that formed from the large number of riders.

Chris, you had an awesome race! Congratulations on your performance. You have inspired me to work harder on my swim times and I will be mentally chasing you down on my open water swims. I will see you next year at St. A's if you're back - except I will be triathlete by then (maybe even with a wetsuit).

It was also really nice to meet you; midwesterners are such good people. Oh, and pink is a good color for you!

Your times were awesome and looks like you were well prepared.
