Subject: Suggestions for a swim coach in Essex County?

Has anyone had success with a particular swim coach in Essex County? I need to get some professional help over here.

I don't think Andrei at WEST offers privates and I don't want to join a Masters group (yet). I tried getting private lessons at the University last year and it was horrible! Is there somewhere else I should look?

I might also suggest Loaring Physio...there is a guy they recommend named Jeff I think?

I was going to suggest the Loaring too.    For some serious swim assessment.

The Essex Masters Tri class has a great instructor.  Her name is Sarah.  They also offer private swimming lessons.

Interesting, I didn't know that there was swim coaching offered through Loaring. I believe that Charlotte comes from a competitive swim background, so I would assume that Jeff is good. I noticed on the website that the rates for stroke correction come down very quickly with groups of 2-4, so I'd be interested in a small group session if anyone else is. I went to Master's class for a few years and while I liked the drills and felt that swimming in a group pushed me to be faster, I never received any particularly useful stroke correction.

A small group is a great idea, Dave! I'll look into rates for privates vs. group instruction and report back.

The rates are posted here:

$60 for an hour of on-on-one stroke correction, ranging down to $25 each for a group of 4.

No, I've spoken with James (Loaring) and am still waiting to hear back from Jeff. The most they will do is four to ensure that everyone gets suitable attention from the coach.

But it sounds like we have six. Do we want to split into two groups of three by skill level? I would say (with no offense intended to Jeff or David) that Tracey, Tim, and Dave would be Group A and Jeff, David, and I would be Group B?

Depending on his availability too, not everyone may be able to commit in the end. We may only end up with four (or fewer) of us as it is. I will keep you all posted when I hear back from Jeff!

I belive that Jeff is a teacher so he is off in the summer just an FYI and there is a women named LAURA that works at Total Fitness in Kingsville that coaches the Leamington masters group. She will do one on one coaching as well.

Sounds like my wife Robin is also interested. Does anyone know what pool it would be at? When we know Jeff's availability then we will commit to a group. We went to Essex pool last night...I need the help quick.

Jeff Cowan coaches out of the downtown YMCA and the Essex pool.

Do we want to wait to hear back from Jeff or should I try to contact this Laura person too?

Laura coached the Leamington Masters class while I was attending, so I would not likely benefit from a stroke correction class from her.

I heard back from Jeff and he's available for coaching. He's been very busy with graduation and now he's taking some swimmers to a competition in Greece, so he won't be able to meet us until the week of July 6th at the earliest. He wanted to know if we preferred the YMCA or Essex location? I asked him to let us know what days/times work for him and then we would see how many of us can make it.

Jeff's availability is pretty wide open. The cost to swim in Essex is $3.25 and at the Y it's $7.50 per use.

If we swim in Essex, it's Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-10pm. If we swim at the Y, it's M-F 5:30-8:30am, Saturdays from 7-9am or 5-7pm, and Sundays 7-10am or 3-5pm.

It looks like the only of those times that will work for Tim would be Mon/Wed mornings at the Y - which won't work for me. If we're going to be two groups, maybe we can try to arrange two different time slots to accommodate everyone?

I would prefer a Monday or Wednesday evening in Essex or a Saturday morning at the Y, myself.

Actually Robin and I can make the Monday or Wednesday at 9:00pm. We are on vacation for the 1st week in July.

We will start a group for Monday July 13th from 9:00pm to 10:00pm at the Essex pool. We need two more, who's in?

July 13th at 9pm works for me! If more than two other people want to join that group though, I can also join a different session.
