My 1st was Escape from Ft. Delaware.  I did it on a mountain bike and people couldn't have been nicer to me as they wizzed by.  Great support and a well run race made it easy to be a 1st timer.  Although as I say that, I've tried looking for the 2009 race and I don't see it.  Maybe it got nixed?

browncd - 2009-06-16 10:16 PM OLd Hickory Triathlon in Hendersonville, TN just north of Nashville. It is a very beginner friendly Sprint Tri. Swim is 400 yards in a cove on Old Hickory Lake so it is calm warm water. It has a Time Trial start. No mass start that to make it beginner friendly. The swim is followed by a 1.5 mile run to the bike tansition area. Then there is a 12.5 mile bike on a relative easy bike course. After the bike there is another 1.5 mike run. There is around 450 participating with more then 50% beginners. They have a two designated lpeople to be the last finishers so no matter how slow the real last person is they will not be offically last. They run with that person to encourage them make it to the finish. It is well organized so there hasn't been any issues beginners and more experienced folks getting in each others way.

The Old Hickory Lake tri mentioned above is on the 27th of this month and is put on by www.Team-Magic.com They host several tris in the Nashville area and are very beginner-friendly. The GJCC mini-sprint is a 200 meter pool swim, 8 mile bike and a 2 mile run. It is held on Memorial Day.

You guys convinced me - I just signed up.  Should be a good first race post-calf injury.

Hawk Island Tri in Lansing, MI.  It's a 400 meter swim in small, calm pond/lake.  You can do the mass start or do the time trial start...it's your choice.  It has a pretty flat bike course and a nice run through the park on a shaded paved trail.  It's VERY well organized and very beginner friendly.  Usually held the last weekend in May.

I was just told about one in Nashville.  The music city triathlon.  This year they have added a short course and even have a whole division just for beginners.  If you've raced 3 tri's or less you can compete in this division or the regular age group division.  It is also put on by teammagic.com .  They have an intermediate distance and short course distance this year. It is on  July 27th and I'm planning on signing up for this one. Looks like a well supported, fun race.

Iron Girl series races (I've done Columbia myself but I know there are others across the country) are extremely first-timer friendly for women. http://www.aflacirongirl.com/

There are also indoor triathlons at gyms like Lifetime Fitness that are first-timer friendly. The Toyota/Lifetime Fitness Indoor triathlon consists of 10 minutes in the pool, 30 on a spinner bike equipped with a bike computer, and 20 on the treadmill. Scores are tallied based on distances covered in those times. It's somewhat comforting for first-timers knowing you only have to be in the pool for 10 minutes or on the treadmill for 20 vs. completing a particular distance!

x2 on Hawk Island.  It was my first race just a couple weeks ago and it was excellent.  I filled out a survey after the race and actually had a hard time thinking of things I'd want them to change.

My husband and I have signed up for the Old Hickory Lake tri on the 27th.  I am really glad it is beginner friendly, because this is our first.

If we do well (survive) we are going to do the Scenic Mountain Triathlon in Richwood, WVA.  In any event, I am excited and nervous.

For BT-ers in the maritime provinces of Canada or for southern neighbors in ME, NH, MA or VT, I would highly recommend the Duncan Hadley Triathlon in Fredericton New Brunswick. Swim had a beginner wave that started after the main pack, closed bike course and run is on a forest trail surrounding a lake. Plus Fredericton is a great city for tourists

Another nice short one near Philly is Marshman, at Marsh Creek State Park.  Late in the season so plenty of time for training.  It is also an ultra short race - 1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 2 mile run,  The bike course is not too hilly, and the run is nicely shaded.
