Guess you guys have the wrong families - that stinks.

We've gone on a week long family get-together with my side of the family, and we've spent a week or more with my in-laws quite a few times.

Some of the most enjoyable times we've ever had.

It helps to spend you time someplace fun.  In our case that was the Smokies (my family) and the Florida Keys (hers).

We spend a week or so with the in-laws every year, and do lots of short road trips with them and with my family. But we're a drinking partying hanging out kind of crew, so it works okay...as long as we have separate bedrooms/tents/cabins.

Lately, it's been easier to hang out with the in-laws than the my immediate family.  Go figure.

Cruises are great for this.

You can find separate things to do during the day, then meet up for dinner at night.

We all went to Mexico for a cousin's wedding in December 2007 and it was great. I'd rather go on an extended family vacation in Mexico then travel to Kansas/Texas for a wedding. Got a little bit of a vacation out of it and got to see family that I don't get to see very often. Good times were had!

i drove around Alaska for a week last fall with my parents, two aunts, and an uncle. We were there for my cousin's wedding. Best. Time. Ever.
