ohh this is my thing!!  I'm always underlining things that appeal to me - two favs right now:

One is a song my daughter sings *constantly* by Hannah Montana believe it or not:
"'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain,
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
   It's the climb, yeah!"

And a great book filled with messages is "Into the Wild" - really makes you think:
"So many people live in unhappy circumstances and will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give on peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future.  The very core of man's living spirit is his passion for adventure.  The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."

Recommendations from Commander Keith Davis, US Navy SEAL and Kona Ironman:

1. Eliminate self-limiting thoughts. More often than not, people have preconceived notions about what is possible for them to achieve. They sell themselves short. Abolish thoughts that hold you back from achieving your true potential.

2. Optimize your skills. Everyone begins at a different place and each of us are dealt a different set of genetic cards. Use that to your advantage and optimize your assets.

3. Be willing to spend the effort and energy to be successful. Anyone can succeed if they are willing to work at it. Too many people want to reap rewards without the sacrifice that is necessary to achieve any goal.

4. Enjoy the journey. If you can enjoy the pursuit of excellence, you've got it made. Aiming to enjoy only the end result makes it impossible to endure the necessary sacrifices to achieve any goal really worth having.

5. Be a student. The more you understand about what it is you're trying to do and how to do it, the easier it is to be successful. Be a student of your passion.

6. Persevere. There are many things that can get in the way of successfully achieving any goal. You have to be willing to figure out how to get over, under, around or through those obstacles. Keep trying.

7. Develop mental toughness. It is not the physical challenges that keep men from successfully surviving the SEAL training, it is mentally giving up. You need to start believing that you can do it, you can be successful. Others have been successful before you, you can do it too.

8. Be prepared to suffer. When you are training for an event as large as a 140.6-mile triathlon, it is a long haul. There is going to be bad weather, aching body parts and times when you are just plain tired. Know that some stress, followed by rest, will make you stronger physically and mentally.

9. Take strength from others. This tip is particularly valuable for race day. Right when you are thinking things are really bad for you, look around. You'll see that others are suffering too. Knowing you're not the only one and that other people will suffer generates energy, if you're willing to accept it.

10. You must want success. Doing something that is difficult requires that you want to be successful with every fiber of your core. The intense desire to succeed helps you overcome obstacles that crush other people.

11. Avoid over-training. It is easy for highly motivated people to over-train. Achievers are often rewarded for doing more and working harder. While you must work hard and do the prescribed work, you must also rest in order to reap the benefits.

My most motivational thing isn't a quote either.  My 3 year old son has cancer.  When I think I can't possibly do any more, I think how hard he is fighting to kick cancer's and I push myself harder.

If he can do it, so can I!

Thats funny... I usually give myself the quote to get started, or use one when I am coaching, but when I am nearing the end of, or what I think is my end for that day... I think about my wife and my daughter and find some strength... when that strength is running low, I think about (I swear) our men and women in the militery... 4 more miles of jogging for a race is far better than running 4 miles in the desert tracking down the bad guy... and I must not dishonor them by complaining about my freedoms.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning in
Africa, a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

I'd just like to post some thoughts from these quotes... favorites so far are the one from Muhammad Ali, Bear Gryll, and from "Into the Wild." The movie was incredible, as was this quote. I'm sure the book is a million times better.

Some of my own mantras...

An Army favorite: "The beatings will continue until morale improves!"

Copied from Runner's World a couple years ago: "Somewhere in the World, someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win."
(Missed 3rd in my age group at Morgan Hill by 70 sec!)

From the book "Dr. Sheehan on Running,"
"The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am."

Not exactly about sports, but...
“Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries." -Jimmy Carter

Thanks for sharing all of these. Yes, I am a sucker for quotes.

wow, no Pre fans? His are the absolute best!

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more. Nobody is going to win a 5,000 meter race after running an easy 2 miles. Not with me. If I lose forcing the pace all the way, well, at least I can live with myself."

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift."

"What I want is to be number one."

"Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it."

"The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a good day to die"

Two of my favorites:

"Nobody ever fell to the top of the mountain.."

"They can kill you, but they won't eat you. Drive on." That one from a black cap at airborne school years ago during a loooong run.

'Cause sometimes you feel tired, feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up. But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength and just pull that sh*t out of you and get that motivation to not give up and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

My personal favorite:

Le difficile nous pouvons faire immédiatement… Les prises impossibles un peu plus longtemps Napoleon Bonaparte.

The difficult we can do immediately.... The immpossible takes a little bit longer.

And a close second from one of the threads:
Go ahead princess sleep in..... Just one more person for me to beat on race day.
