wakehr - 2009-08-19 10:44 AM I usually do not warmup prior to race but been told that's not real smart and should get in water for 5 min for some stroke work. What do you do for a warm-up?

I always get in the water for a warm up before the race.  Even if it's just 50 meters it's good for me to get a feel for the water before the race.  It also calms me down Smile

I did this for the 1st time at my race on Sunday and I'm glad I did.  It gave me a feel for the water and helped me shake off some of the pre-race nerves.

Got my packet today....it had been a while since I was in the Tri on the Run store...boy some of those bikes look nice!

I'm doing the sprint and found out I'm in the VERY LAST WAVE of the day...ugh...so much for any attempt at warming up.  Hopefully they'll let us sprinters get in during the 15 minute break is for between the Olympic and Sprint.  Boy I wish I could have maintained by training plan this summer as I was hoping this would be my first Olympic.

Why aren't there any more Olympic distances in the Houston area late in the season?

Hell it's the only olympic we have all year! If it wasn't for me and Chris hounding Greg to make this a real Olympic there would be none! I'm glad Galveston next year will also be a Olympic, that will give us two solid Olympics a year at least. I can live with that.

I'm #1 and go in the very first wave.. which makes warming up much easier! Though I could do without the number 1. Not a fan of having #1. ;p

Big thanks for getting Greg to make this an Oly !! If all goes well Saturday I'm signing up for Ironstar in November. So glad triathlon events continue to multiply and expand, maybe we'll get our own IM in Texas soon !! Let us know how to help make this happen.

I'd try this Saturday since its legal but way too hot besides the BO factor would be a killer ! Added note, you'd fight off anyone else wanting to pull.

BTW, this is not a draft legal race... if that is what you were implying (wasn't sure).  That's an ITU thing and not just an Olympic distance thing.  USAT races are non-draft legal, unless specifically sanctioned and stated by them.  In the race packet it states - no drafting - cause for penalty.

I don't want ya to get dinged!  I hope everyone has a great race!  Good luck!

Note on the olympic distance races....I think some of the reason there aren't many longer than sprints in July and August in the area is because of the heat. I think a Sept/Oct olympic would be great, but I'm not thrilled at the idea of a 10k in August in Houston under any circumstances...not to mention after a swim and bike.

As far as next year there will also be an olympic distance in Kemah the weekend of April 10-11. Maybe we can convice Greg to move Clear Lake to some cooler weather!

Just got back and had a great time. Finished my first olympic tri, yup im tired. I don't know who thought the name for the Lake (Clear Lake) but is must have neem some sort of joke. I couldn't see my hand when i extended it in front of me it was that brackish. Other than that fun times.

I hope everyone else did good as well.

Great job Mark!  Congrats on your first Olympic.  I did the Sprint (which was a longer than most sprints) and did pretty well by improving on my paces in all 3. My biggest complaint was that I gashed my chest when I "fell forward" as they instructed when I got knee-deep in the water.  That, plus grabbing some rocks about 200 yards into the swim left me with some scraped finger tips.

Overall, I loved the race, the atmosphere and the post-race food.

Just finished my first Triathlon (sprint) at Clear Lake! It was just right I could not have gone any more than that distance. I look forward to more sprints as I am very much a rookie! The swim was a bit long for the other sprints that I am thinking of doing in the future! seemed like I almost forgot how to swim at the first of the race? Panic , Fear, anxiety, hyperventilate, yes i did them all. After first bouy turn I settled down and got my breathing right. that was a cool feeling! Yes I got out of the water and had a lot of cuts and skin loss on hands and feet? What was the deal there? Overall good experience. Thinking about Summertime Festival in Freeport next!! After some rest that is!

Summertime blues is a great race. It goes a bit under the radar, but it's a good race! I'll be there for sure.

And just so you know.. now.. after the race is done. That you all swam with gators today. I saw one about 600-800m from the swim right by the boat ramp while warming up. It was actually a good sized one for around here at probably 4-5ft. I pointed it out to some friends but didn't want to freak anyone out, so kept it on the down low.

However, now you can say you swam with some gators.

Awesome job everyone. Gaters? I aint affraid of no stinkin gater! Glad I didn't see him just the same.

As an added bonus, I asked a frined of mine to come out with me and take pictues whenever he saw something cool. He ended up taken over 260 shots of random people. Lots of nice picts of people comming out of the water and finishing. He didn't get everyone and pretty much stopped wheh I finished but there might an off chance he got one of you. Here's the link to a gallery I set up;

If he happened to catch one of you or you see something you like just let me know and I'll e-mail the full rez vrsion. Enjoy.

Gators!! Glad I didn't know that Stephen, then again I would have had a faster swim time. I enjoyed my first Olympic race and thought it was pretty well organized despite the vandals attempts at disrupting the race. There was one light with no police and everyone had to stop, otherwise a decent route. A flat messed up my bike portion at mile 16 but hey it happens. Almost turned an ankle at a recessed manhole, saw it but stepped in it anyway. that's how much your IQ can drop racing. The watermelon was simply the best. Overall a great venue. Now do I want to stretch ever more and do Ironstar in November?? Hmmm!!

Thank you for keeping it on the DL, that would have seriously freaked me out!  Crap, I wish you hadn't said anything at all and I could have pretended there was nothing at all in that damn body of water (I am certainly not going to refer to it as CLEAR lake, LOL)!  I am one of those people where ignorance is bliss on this sort of thing.  I know there will be all sorts of stuff in FL in November, but I just keep telling myself that I am just going for a swim (and ignoring the fact that creatures actually live in the water!).

I looked at the age group winners.  I think one of them was a guy I went to High School with.  He used to make fun of me riding my bicycle everywhere.  I guess he finally started riding himself after 30 some odd years.

I'm thinking the lake that leads into Clear Lake used to be called Mud Lake.  It's called Pasadena Lake now according to Google Maps.

It's pretty nasty.

It's South East Texas, the gulf isn't exactly clear and Clear Lake connects to the Bayou(hence the gator). Who expected clear water? lol.

Not sure about the rocks(or maybe a boat underwater?) 200m out, I brushed it with my hand as well. Just not sure what could of been done about that.

The rocks at the start were bad luck. I was actually out there the evening before helping put up the start and exit ramps. We had used the exit ramp the year before and the entry into the water there wasn't too bad, however the Start entry was very bad. I backed out of helping move rocks, but two guys jumped in and started moving rocks. However 20min later the sky opened up with very heavy rains and lots of lighting, so I doubt they got it cleared anywhere near to their liking. Not to mention the ramp we layed/tied up for the start entry washed away over night.

I think I saw the gator you're talking about, or if not another one.  During my warm-up, I was running on the bridge on the way back to transition and saw what looked to be the head of an alligator floating in the water about 100-200 yards from the boat ramp and 25 yards from the bridge.  It was still fairly dark, but I stopped to do a double take, then convinced myself it was just debris in the water.  Glad I wasn't smart enough to realize that it probably was a gator.

Way to go!  Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend.

BTW, my hubby mentioned that he has seen alligators up to 10-12 feet in those waters.  Yikes!  Good thing to know AFTER the race.  I'm a big ol' chicken, so I doubt I'd be doing Clear Lake anytime soon.

I saw the same gator as I did my pre-race warm-up...looked hard a couple of times, trying to convince myself it was a log, but I've seen too many of them to not recognize it.

As for the unmarked underwater hazards, just unacceptable.  I look like I lost a cat fight, over 30 lacerations from the tops of my feet to my fingertips.  And knowing that a guy just died from contracting the flesh-eating bacteria in Galveston Bay a few weeks ago, just scary.  I've been using hydrogen peroxide and neosporin since Sat. morning.

And what was up with the run course and the bike course crossing each other near the transition area?  All in all, I thought the race was pretty poorly organized.  But, I finished my first Olympic distance, and all was good...until mile 3 on the run when I ran out of gas.  Just too warm, I guess.  But I finished in 2:51, under my 3 hr goal, so it was OK.

Still have a lot of work to do before the HIM at Redman next month though!
