Elite Veteran 610 chicago area | Subject: ITBS questions and hip pain I ran a 5K yesterday and my hip is really sore. It's right below the bone on the left side-I can push and feel where it hurts. This has been bothering me for the last few months since coming back from my pregnancy but not to this extent. I've also broken several rules: upped my mileage a little too fast probably have bad form went roller skating for the first time in 20 years the night before and it started hurting then. I try to stretch it and got "the stick" to roll over the IT band which does seem to help. Also, I've looked at past posts and articles on this and it seems the pain usually occurs in the knee and didn't see much info on hip pain. I had knee surgery (ACL reconstruction) and I'm wondering if I'm subconsciously favoring the knee and throwing off my gait. Maybe carrying around a 22 pound baby doesn't help either. I guess my questions are: Is this ITBS? Can it be caused from previous knee surgery on the same leg? Should I see an ortho doc or chiropractor or sports medicine specialist? Sorry, had to ramble on a little. Hopefully someone can help. Edited by bmax 2005-04-25 3:11 PM |

Extreme Veteran 573 Sherman Oaks, CA | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain I can't answer all of your questions except that yes, ITBS can happen in the hip. About 5 years ago while training for a marathon, I developed it in my knee while my husband developed "IT Band Hip Snap" in his hip. I think he may have also had some bursitis, too. He went thru physical therapy, continued training and the problem went away/healed. He finished the marathon in 3:40. Regardless of my statements above, if you are in pain and it is not just sore muscles, yes, you should see a dr, preferably an orthopaedist that specializes in sports medicine and/or running. |

Does you hip start hurting when you start your run or does it start after a few miles? I've laid off running for 10 days now hoping the rest will help it heal. Can't decide if biking irratates it though. Maybe a few days rest will help yours. good luck Clay |

Member 33 | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain Not sure about ITBS and so on, but I got what sounds like a very similar pain last year, about mid-summer after I significantly upped my running distance and intensity. It was on the left side, right by the bone. Had an x-ray and the orthopod said no visible problems, probably just bursitis. I was worried about Bo Jackson's disease or something. I've found that I get this similar pain now if I go golfing and have a more twisting motion with my hip. Running is OK this year, but it took a couple months of complete rest to go away last fall/winter. I've also added glucosamine with chondroitin to my daily diet. Could be that stretching it out may help. Just my 2 cents...I hope you feel better. |

Master 1728 portland, or | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain >>Is this ITBS? It could be. The ITB connects to the hip, and while ITBS is more common in the knee, it can affect the hip. >>Can it be caused from previous knee surgery on the same leg? I have the opposite problem (MCL reconstruction on r. knee - hip pain on left side), but anything that is throwing your biomechanics off can be a cause. >>Should I see an ortho doc or chiropractor or sports medicine specialist? Based on my personal experience, I would start with the sports med physician. Since you have sensitivity to touch/pressure, I would start by resting and using ice 3-4x/day for 15 minutes. NSAID's if they don't bother you. You may find that relieving the pain, then implementing a stretching program that focuses on the hip, hamstring, and quads may solve the problem. Good luck. scott |

Elite Veteran 610 chicago area | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain I read another post about competing in tri's and just walking the run part. I have already registered for 2 sprints and am still going to participate. I'ts going to be difficult to walk, but if I'm still sore in June, then I'm walking. No sense in making matters worse. The hip doesn't bother me when I swim or bike. |

Regular 98 New York, NY | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain I would consider walking the run, but at this point I experience the most pain from biking, and unfortunately I don't think I can walk the bike. I'm sure I'll know more after my doctor's appointment on Friday. I actually found a female sports medicine doctor! After all these years I was wondering whether such a thing existed. |

Extreme Veteran 492 Home port | Subject: For you peeps who have IT band/hip issues You don't have to subject yourselves to walking the run portion of a tri, or miss many weeks. Why don't you all check out this webiste www.tpmassgeball.com ! Their products have a proven track record with thousands of athletes who suffer from IT band probs to plantar fasciitis. I am a rep for the company, and many people on this site and tri-newbies are using this product with great success on my recommendation. There is a ton of great advice from icing to running form, but until you treat the problem, not just the symptoms, your injuries will keep coming back. Check out the site, you really hve nothing to lose. Feel free to pm me or call 610-405-2569. Bryan |

Extreme Veteran 348 Honolulu, HI | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain Brenda - I'm a physical medicine & rehab doc, maybe I can help a little. You're right that Iliotibial band syndrome more commonly presents as knee pain. The IT band runs on the lateral aspect of the knee, and can get irritated by repetetive motion across the lateral femoral condyle - a bony prominence on the knee end of your femur. Fairly common in distance runners. If your pain is very close to or over the greater trochanter - the bony prominence on the upper lateral portion of your femur - it might be trochanteric bursitis. Other symptoms of that might include not being able to lie on that side due to pain right there, pain when rising from a seated position, pain after walking 20-30min. Obviously it's impossible for me to tell too much without examining you, but hope that helped a little! Definitely think getting in to see a sports med or physical medicine (PMR) doc would be a good idea, probably a physical therapist as well (I'm a huge proponant of PT!) Rob |

Elite Veteran 610 chicago area | Subject: RE: ITBS questions and hip pain Thanks Rob! I saw where you live, can I come to you for an appointment? Seriously, I have pain when getting out of the car and especially when stretching that area with crossed over feet and leaning to the opposite side. I'll look into some sports med docs in the area and see what I can find. Thanks for the help. |
