Finished my triathlon this morning.

First limiter was definitely my fitness level - I'm not nearly as 'in shape' as I thought I was.  Cant hide from the training on race day....

Other than that, I had a pretty good day, considering:

10 minutes before my swim, I lost my goggles... Oh Crap! retraced all my steps, dumped out my bag - no goggles.  To hell with it, I'm swimming anyway.

5 minutes before swim, I go to get into the water, try to zip up my wetsuit, and broke the zipper off... it swung around and popped my right in the lip.  Nice...  No goggles and an unzipped wetsuit that was trying to fall off, but I swam, and beat 17 guys out of the water.  I'll take that.

They all blew by me on the bike though - I've got an old, falling apart mountain bike.  I had the slowest time on the bike today, by a long ways.

Got off the bike, started the run and BLAM! Both calves cramped... took a good half mile of walking/jogging/struggling before they quit cramping.  Run/walked the rest of the 5k, and managed to be the last male, although I did beat 6 women on time (their swim started 10 minutes ahead of the males).

So, TODO:
  1. get in better shape
  2. carry a backup pair of goggles
  3. get a road bike
  4. get in better shape

I'll rock it next year....

thanks for all the help BT - you guys and gals are the best.

Way to overcome adversity!  Do you know what the call the person who finishes DFL?  TRIATHLETE - same as the person who finishes first!

No goggles, unzipped wetsuit, mountain bike and you MADE it! That is what I'd call HARDCORE. Way to go! It can only get better for next time.

Wahoo! Way to go, Mel! You must have really gained some confidence in your swim this spring to go against the odds like that. Going to read your race report!

I have been DFL once too.  And I kept repeating "DFL>DNF>DNS" and that made me feel a lot better!

Congrats!  Love your go get 'em next time attitude!  Also, your report will be my motivation to keep getting out there and training for my first!  Thanks!

I sharpied DFL>DNF>DNS onto my arm before my first tri just in case I needed a reminder!

Rock the house, Mel! Sounds like you persevered through stuff most of those other people would have cried over. They probably had "easy" races compared to you! Savor these memories, tuck them away...and then have a great laugh after next year's tri when you cream the course!

Dude... seriously! I agree with the hardcore comment. Anybody who'd get in the water at a Tri with NO goggles on and a broken wetsuit has my admiriation. I think they should've made up a new award right there on the spot for you. In my opinion, that makes you the honarary winner of the HTFU award! As the guy at the end of the HTFU video says "Spot on!".... SPOT ON MEL!!

You're still doing better than me.  I haven't yet run a triathlon.  You have.

Congrats!
