Pre-race routine:

Set up camp the night before at Blue Mounds. Weather was crap..rainy and humid. Craig brought a big ass tarp to cover the tent so we were good to go. Met up with Wavedog (Jon), PeterAK and Lori. Had a few beers with them around the camp fire then went to bed. Got up at 5am had a bagel with PB, banana and coffee. Headed down to the start with Craig and Robert, but got there a few minutes after 7, so we missed the start. Not a big deal because it seemed that everyone was just starting when they wanted to. Said goodbye to Craig and told him to keep his cell phone handy in case I needed him to drag my ass off the course.

Comments:

Rode side by side with Robert and chatted most of the first 25 miles...or shall I say b*itched the first 25 miles. I had major mechanical issues with my bike. Swapped out the cassette a few days before, and did not realize there was a spacer missing. The cassette was loose and whenever I had to put it in the granny gear, which was A LOT, it would skip gears making a horrible noise. I felt bad for Robert because he had to listen to me complain the whole 25 miles. Climbed the last hill before the first 25 mile aid station and called Craig. Told him I wasn't having any fun, it was hot, the hills were "horrible" and I was thinking of quiting. I explained to him what was going on with my bike, so he agreed to meet me at the first aid station to have the REI guys look at it. He said it needed a spacer and that the cassette was loose and my chain was too short. Unfortunately the guys didn't have the part I needed, so Craig went to the van and pulled apart his bike to give me the part I needed. THANK YOU CRAIG!! Got a bite to eat..and met up with Lazymarathoner, wavedog, and 1TT to start the next leg of the ride.

The bike was riding perfect. I was so happy that they were able to fix it because I really wanted to finish the ride. This part of the ride was a blast. Laughed, chatted and just had fun. My chain did fall off 3 times while climbing but that was nothing compared to what I was dealing with. There were some hills I just did not climb as fast as the others, but they were always waiting for me at the top. (Thank you Kristin, Robert, Phil and Jon...you guys are the best). This was a very tough part of the course, but I made every hill.

Finally got to the second aid station and met up with Craig again. Lots of riders standing around and he yells to me as I am getting off my bike "Honey your cigarettes are in the car..I'll go get them for you now." Everyone turned around and looked at me like WTF...yeah he's a funny guy. Just glad he didn't have the bullhorn for this one. Again..got a bite to eat..filled my water bottles and off we went for the last leg.

All of us realizing we had the worst hill to climb at the end. Our legs were trashed and we were ready to be done. Phil's quads started cramping, so I waited with him for a bit until he worked them out. Rode through Barneveld and passed 3 bars and could smell the greasy fried food. Knew they had BEER too. We were tempted to stop, but didn't.

Last leg of this ride was horrible. I walked the two last hills. I had nothing left. Kept telling myself to get back on the bike, but the hills were so steep I couldn't do it without falling over. I got to the top of Blue mounds hill and this climb was the worst. Saw Craig and then saw the finish line about 100 yards away. He told me to get my ass back on the bike and finish strong. I yelled a few curse words at him then decided to get back on. He held my bike for me and gave me a push to get me going. I crossed the finish line with a smile on my face. So glad I did this ride. It certainly made the Ironman course look so much easier now.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my bike is working BEFORE I ride.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a bit but started having trouble breathing. Craig ran to the car and got my inhaler...took two puffs and I was fine. Went and got some culvers ice cream then sat and chatted with MissKelly, Whizzzzz, Lazymarathoner, Wavedog, 1TT, Robert, Schmize, Mndiver (and wife Kelly)Donnawiz and Craig. Finally felt like eating some real food and drank some beer. Waited for Tripletmom to finish, then headed back to the campground.

Great ride...great company. Had an absolute blast. I heart my BT friends. ;)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HEAT AND HUMIDITY!! I think it was close to 90.

Event comments:

Fun!! Would do it again. Did I just say that?

Well, you did it!  In a way, I'm glad I wasn't Robert for the first 25 miles (kidding)

I was getting a little about you out there with that humidity.

Now, I hope when you do IM that you and Kristen don't have social hour during the race.

GREAT JOB, AMYJO!!!!!  IM Moo bike will be a breeze now!

And wow - awesome restraint not stopping for the beers.  Just reading that report made me want a beer.  (not that the report made me want a beer, it was the thought of the hills and riding them and reading about them in your report and then.... oh crap - I need a beer)
ANYWHO - way to go!!!!

Great job!  It is one tough ride, especially the hill at the end.  Having mechanical issues in the first 25 miles would make me really grumpy too.  Good thing Craig was there...both for the bike parts and the cigarettes.

Amy, it was so much fun to share this experience with you! I wouldn't have survived without our little group. Oh, and thanks for bumming me that cigarette, I really needed that to make it up the final hill!
