....it's great!

I tried this 2 weeks ago, from a few articles I've read, etc...and I didn't like it. Shins hurt, and I didn't see the point. But, after reading some helpful tips on here a few days ago about Chi Running (no, I didn't buy the book yet), I implemented these into my jogging routine last evening, and I actually picked up my pace--considerably!!! No shin pain or lower back problems to report today!! I'm really excited about this new technique. I think something just "clicked" yesterday, and I could go farther, and faster, without all the pain. It really felt great to go faster, and realize..."hmm...I'm not feeling pain right now..."

I'm pleasantly amazed!! I read an article recently in "Runner's World" that summed it all up perfectly--"it's not running that injures us, it's running BADLY!!"

Thanks to all who talked about Chi Running on here, and I'm definitely going to buy the book! It was a little weird at first--to "lean" into my stride--but now, I'm sold!

Glad to hear that it's working so soon for you.  My copy just arrived from Amazon yesterday and I can't wait to read it, and can't wait to get rid of these shin splints (I do so hope).

I'm reading it right now and it's pretty cool. I haven't gotten to the actual technique yet, but I am enjoying the book. It's much more fun to READ about running that actually run sometimes...but maybe that book will change that!

Just from the little info I gathered off of here, I started leaning forward into my stride, instead of pulling back, which is typical I guess for runners. The core ends up strengthening, and then the pelvis levels--which is what I don't think I understood a few weeks ago. I think that's what causes the shin splints. (leaning back) I noticed a big change in my performance yesterday, as I could go faster with no pressure on my shins. I wonder what other new info awaits in the book, if I've already seen improvement just from the little I've learned!

Good luck everyone--here's to running, injury-free!!

AFter finishing a ChiRUnning session, I'm actually looking forward to the next run...usually the next day I'm chomping at the bit to go again, but give myself a rest day anyway. It's VERY unusual for me to WANT to go for a run!

Yes...that's how I feel!!! Definitely new feeling for me, too!

I tried the sideways uphill technique this morning on a little hill.  Felt very smooth and kinda natural.

As you know, the idea is to keep your foot fully on the ground when it strikes rather than running on your toes.  I did about six strides one way and then six the other way.

You run in a straight line, but angle you foot at each stride. Maybe 30 degrees or something? Really works

haha--I see! So, you face your feet outwards a bit, when landing? I think I do that naturally, I'm not sure if I land my feet perfectly straight. ?? I'll have to pay more attention, but if this lessens the pain, I'll do it.

I guess you are a natural Chi runner! Good genetics

It really helps. Do a few strides straight, and then oa few sideways, you feel the difference right away.

Yes, about 30 degrees or so.

You bring one foot over the other.  Take several strides, then switch to the other side.  This keeps the middle of your foot on the ground when it strikes, rathr than the ball of your foot.

I haven't tried it enough to know if it's the way to go, but the little I tried it today made me want to do more.

I don't think I'll win any races running this way, but my understanding of chirunning technique is that it will help me run injury free.

the sideways running, you're feet both point to the side in the SAME direction. Not outwards, one out and one in.

side running: not only feet, wou turn whole body to the side some 15-30 degrees when running uphill.switch sides.
I'm sorry i didn't order CD with the book. It must be a good thing to listen CD with a workout instructions ("focuses") while running! After reading a book 2nd time, now i notice so much bad postures around!
The book makes perfect sense. And running... well it is not exactly like gliding effortlesly and endlessly, but definitly much much easier and faster. I think this book is a must-have! And there is CD and DVD also.
Metronome tip is great! To buy a metronome and set it to 85-90 to improve cadence. Goes to biking, too. It is next on my shopping list.

I see now...so, it's pretty much something you do when you're running UPhill? That makes sense...thanks for the advice! I wish I felt a bit better today, as I'd try this. My neighborhood is very hilly, so it'll be good practice. But...I'll try it tomorrow. I wonder if my neighbors will think I've lost it...haha

Thanks, again.

I had to break down and buy the dvd to understand the technique completely. I like Chi running and think that it can be a benefit to anyone. Those of you that have shin splints try incorporating some barefoot running at a park into your routine. It will strengthen your whole leg and you will slowly feel the pain go away over time.
