Subject: chicago - workout recommendations/ running ???
Hi All,
I am traveling to Chicago for business 6/25 through 6/27 and staying at:

Marriott Downtown Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel
540 North Michigan Avenue

Any recommendations for early morning or evening runs that are free from too many cars ? any close masters swimming classes ?

thanks,

Running wont be a problem.  Head north on Michigan until you see the Lake, and the Lakefront path.  Thats definitely the best place for running.  No traffic, and in the morning its usually not too crowded.  But if you wait until later in the day, could be packed, especially by the beaches and volleyball courts.  Swimming, hopefully someone else knows

For running, just head about 0.5mi east on Grand Ave and you'll hit the lakefront path, which provides miles & miles of car free running, although depending on the time of day, you may run into traffic jams of other runners, bikers, walkers & roller bladders!

Bring your wetsuit and hit the lake.  Theres a swimmer friendly beach at Oak St, right next to the path, pretty close to where youll be.  Google Map it, and you cant miss the beach.  The water is warming up, I think its about 65-67 right now, plenty warm, even if you dont have a suit, you should be okay.  This time of year there are almost always swimmers out there, so if you leave your shoes by the bikes or out of the way, you should be okay.

Ditto what everyone else said, but, keep in mind, the EARLIER you can get on the path, the better, because it gets REALLY crowded.

The lake at Oak Street is where all us "cool kids" hang out and train when it's warm out....I'm actually heading down there this afternoon after work.

There are a couple of bike racks there where you can bring a back pack if you want and lock it up while you swim...or you can just bring what you need.

But there are buoys (is that spelled right?) that are marked for the 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile therby equaling a 1/2 mile swim or a mile...lifeguards patrol along the wall, so that's always reassuring...

Let us know if you have any more questions...always happy to help out a fellow BT'er!

Yeah, the cool kids need to learn the city

Its ohio street beach...I gps the buoys last week. Its .31 miles from the first orange ladder to the 1/4 mile buoy and .55 to the 1/2 mile marker.

Yes, best swimming is Ohio Street Beach. If you go toward lake on Grand, there is a crossover under lake shore drive. Head South (lake will be on your left if going right direction)and walk down to the beach there. I've often also just gone right over the side there at one of the ladders and swam toward beach and back, save walking down to the beach just to swim up.

But yes, Ohio Street Beach best place. Its cold, so be prepared!

Went for a swim in the lake at Ohio Street beach this morning, the water temp was about 60F, just perfect! At 6:30am there was nobody swimming, no lifeguards. Things can get stolen there (I heard), so don't leave anything of value on the beach...
