Whether you have a better bike, bike genes or simply work harger really doesn't matter.  Tell them that blowing out someone else's candle does not make theirs shine any brighter...and then smile and forget about it.

Try to get in the habit of comparing yourself only to your former self and not other people.  Of course that is easy for me to say being a BOPer....might be harder for more gifted/talented people.

Charles Barkley said this a long time ago.

"It ain't the tools, it's the carpenter!"

Don't worry about that stuff, they are just jealous.

Maybe this is your sign you have outgrown this group and time to move on to a little more serious group. Oddly enough, you would think at the level you mention everyone would just be supportive and not competitive.

It sounds like you're working hard enough to make yourself faster.  You've earned it.

Are you happy with your results?  You should be!

eabeam - 2009-06-23 3:49 PM I was appalled with the amount of people that will be your friend when they feel superior, but cannot be happy for you when the results of your effort pay off.... You have seen their character.
After getting heckled during a recent training run by several people at a bus stop we passed, I said to kat_astrophe that "I've come to believe that the American dream has nothing to do with fancy cars, big houses, or picket fences. The 21st-century American Dream isn't to rise above and get up on top of everyone else, it's to pull them down to your level, then sit on 'em and be on top that way."

Reminds me of one of my friends favorite quotes...
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, then just beat you with experience

There is no question that you can go faster on a road bike than a MTB. HOWEVER, you don't get to be 15/82 without some serious work. Plus, and don't take offense at this, your bike is almost old enough to legally drink. If your bike were a dog it'd probably be dead. The bike isn't what got you 15/82.

No offense taken Mike.  My bike is a Bianchi (Forza?) circa 1990 in a lovely shade of turquoise.  With a $50 tune-up and a new saddle it is getting me through this season (I hope).  I really want to get a new bike next year but it will take some convincing to get my husband realize that his 20-year old bike is dead - to think I almost made him throw it out a few years ago!

  • .. generally a fun, supportive group ...

  • Doesn't sound fun or supportive to me!?! Sounds catty and immature. Petty jealousy.

    Life is too short to spend valuable time with people like this. Break out on your own, or find 1-2 real nice training partners if you like the support that comes from training with others. Try to hook up with people who have similar goals and training ethics as you have and stick with them.

    Another argument for my cause is the fact that one of the other women who raced this weekend was 5 places better than me on the bike and she was on a mountain bike!

    All I know is that I had a blast and love to race and I can't wait until September to beat my time!

    Part of being fast on a bike *is* the equipment. IMO, the arguments that you're faster because:

    * you're more aero -or-
    * you've got a $$$ bike -or-
    * you have more time to train -or-
    * WHATEVER...

    are all ridiculous and irrelevant.

    The fact is that YOU'RE FASTER and that's all that really matters in a race.

    IMO, if your goal is to be a fast bike rider, "why" you're currently faster shouldn't matter to you. "How" to get even faster should be your concern.

    I thought that you would be faster with the slicks......so not only are you kicking butt........you are also doing it the hard way!

    So I'm in a group of about 20 other moms that train together with a coach once a week in preparation for a race in September - generally a fun, supportive group.  Four of us raced this past weekend because we couldn't wait until Sept - (a try-a-tri of 375m,10k 2.5k) and I was pleased with my results especially my bike leg where I placed 15/82 in my AG and 114/387 in the field (27:14 for the 10k in the pouring rain no less!).

    Here is the part where I get offended - I am the only one of the group that has a road bike (it is a 19-year old hand-me-down from my husband who bought it when he was 16) and everyone else rides mountain bikes with slicks.  I have had a few people in the group comment to me that reason I am so fast is solely to do with the bike.  This really irks me because I work hard and go on 2-3 rides plus a wicked tough spinning class each week.  I feel like challenging the next person who says something to trade bikes and have a race!  I was so happy with how I did and now I am pissed that people want to knock me down.  It is the engine that counts right?

    Look. Don't be offended and don't be concerned about others. Focus on your ability and enhancing your own performance. It's a much better use of your energy.

    Someone else is making an excuse because you did well?  SHEESH!

    Congrats to you and YOUR accomplishment.  I don't see what the big deal was.  They're jealous.  Be proud of YOUR SELF!

    Venting time is over.

    Don't give the haters anymore mental resources that you already have, and get back to training.
