I am a newbie. I raced my first and to this point only tri in march. (I did pretty good thought)
So I am no expert.

Well the heat is on and I am doing the 1/2 iron distance in sept. (Prairieman  in Texas)

So I have been training in the heat. I have been experimenting w/ different thing to try and stay cool. I usually wear a white tri top. Yesterday I bought a uv protection long sleeve (white) to try and run in. It is made by Columbia and is suppose to be an xtreme fishing shirt. Oxymoron? lol PFG is the line. It has a huge vent in the back and some vents in the front. A few pockets that a gel fits into perfectly. It is polester and is made of special wicking material. It does not expose any skin.

It was amazing. By far that was the coolest I felt on the run. It was 6:30 pm, sun high, no clouds and 97 degrees with little to no wind. I ran a 8 mile some what hilly course in 1:01 equaling a 7:38 pace per mile.

I could not believe how well it worked. It does not look as cool as a tight tri shirt, but from now on, in the heat it is my "A "equipment for running.

It was 39.99 at Acadamey.

I hope this helps someone

Thanks for the info!  Us large hot blooded types do appreciate it!!!  That's why I'm up in the Northeast, racing in 65 degree overcast!

I should try something like that.  Dripping sweat drives me bonkers.  It would be nice to have a light covering that wicked it away even off the arms...

I agree, I have the Craft long sleeve heat shirt (Sinballe wore at Kona last 2 years) and I absolutely love it for hot weather... I was very skeptical but it is 2 layers of very thin material and does a excellent job of keeping you cool while keeping sweat from your body.

It is costly so you might want to try the other one but if they are comparable I recomend them to anyone. I know I love my craft one

I did look at the craft.

4 things:

-much more costly

-heavier weight. actual weight and felt heavier on

-no as much uv protection

-not as much ventilation

I try to look outside of tri. specific items. There are a lot of great ideas going on in other fields and they are usually less expensive.

But what ever works, works.Smile

Loose enough to put on if you're wet?

yes, Under-Armor heat gear (white) does the same thing, and it spreads your sweat out over your skin to speed evaporation (and cooling). Desoto makes some clothing using the same principal. It seems strange, but you do stay cooler 90% of the time. The other 10% is high humidity, and I think you're screwed either way there.

That was my next question. HUMIDITY. I am open to any coments for ways to battle this nightmare. I have tried a lot of cooling techniques, but nothing works great. I even tried running with bags of ice in both hands and that melted after 1.5 miles. I hate runnign with fuel belt, but hydration and lots of it is only thing I have found remotely helpful to prolong the inevitable in high heat/humidy. Seeing the run times decrease vs. cooler moths is depressing when you think your making progress, but I will blame the elements for now

I've read what others are saying -- high humidity, not so much.  Low humidity, works great.  That's why this runner is wearing all that clothing, I guess (running in Death Valley):

When it gets hot I love running with a t-shirt or dri fit material shirt wet tied around my neck. It helps to cool down the blood in the carotid arteries that feed your brain.

I've got de Soto leg coolers, arm coolers and a beanie which is fabulous under my bike helmet for keep my scalp cool and UV free.  I can feel that my arms and legs are cooler than my torso - quite spendy though - I got them for Chrismas.

It is not the freeze line. It is the PFG. Performance fishing gear.
