Pre-race routine:

I am just goning to write the run portion of this, as this was a relay. I really didn't have much pre-race anything. As of 24 hours before the race, I was planning on volunteering for the swim and transition, then cheering on everyone finishing. Well, around noon on Friday, I found out that due to unforseen circumstances 2/3 members of a BT relay team was not going to be able to make it. The third was coming in from Canada (this should have been my first clue on how nuts she is:)) and so I said I would run since I was planning on doing a long run anyway. Friday night I picked up Rob and took my kids down to Lakeville for dinner with the gang. Met me new teammate, Aquagirl, and the rest of the gang.
Event warmup:

Got up at 4am, for the second Sat in a row, and headed down to the race. This was the first relay I have ever done. It was neat to see it from a different perspective. I got there early 5:30am, per Aquagirl's instructions and proceeded to wait until 6 until she showed up. Met Rudedog55(Rudy) and our team was complete. We headed down to the swim and tried to chat with everyone, but they all seemed kind of nervous. It was Marianne, Cat, and Erica's first HIM. MAV and Cat had nervous energy. Erica just looked like she was going to throw up. It didn't help that Rudy almost broke her wetsuit zipper 5 minutes before the start. It started and Helen and I went to transition to get her read.

I thought I was going to have to give Rudy CPR.

Since this was a 2 looper, I went out to the street to watch everyone go by. At about an 1 hour and 28 minutes, I see a green flash zip by hootin and hollerin. There goes Helen. Have to go get ready for the run

Transition 2

34 Seconds - 2/11. Just enough time for her to yell as I am grabbing the timing chip, "I am sorry, I have to tell you, I peed on the chip." And I was off.

  • 13.1 miles

I just wanted to run the whole way. I started off nice and easy. Was going to take a gel every three miles and drink 8 ounces of gatorade every 30 mins and water at every aid station. I pretty much kept to that. Had sports beans at mile 6. Although I have participated in a half marathon in Feb and HIM in May, I have never actually run 13.1 continuously. My goal was to get to mile 10 and see where I was. The course was smooth for the most part, which helps my ankles a lot. Miles 7-9 flew by. I actual felt good at 10 and by the time I finished marveling at how good I was feeling, mile 11 popped up. I was getting a bit uncomfortable, but relatively good. I made it to 12 and was hurting more. I was pretty excited to have 1 to go, until I made the left and saw the big hill. I said I would run to the hill and walk. Then I said no way, I made it this far running, I would be kicking myself for a while if I walked now. The hill wasn't as bad as I thought. Saw the cop directing us home. Had about 5 people tell me I was almost there. Crossed the bridge, heard the crowd and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was pretty pleased with my performance all things considered.
Post race
Warm down:

Kathy(KOM) gave me a cold water bottle and an ice towel for my head, sat down next to Cat, who finished minutes before me, and then went for a massage. I was glad to see Lisa and John there cheering us on. Waited for MAV, Kathy, Sue, and Erica, all of whom gave heroic performances out there. Then we all went to eat. The end.

Event comments:

It's hard to say. I was at an Ironman branded event a month ago and it was like night and day. Looks like they were short on volunteers, which I guess I was a reason for that, but MAV's husband filled in nicely. Thanks Al. I was a bit disappointed at the finish. There was no one there. No announcer. No real fanfare. I am glad the BT gang was there cheering for everyone.

Thanks to Helen and Rudy for making awesome teammates.

I am always glad when I get to race with good friends and meeting new ones.

Whoo Hoot! Running 13.1 without walking great job even more impressive doing it with 24 hours notice.

Relays are a blast and takes racing to a different tangent which is great.

It was by far a better race with so many new and old friends there to cheer, wait, laugh and share the day with!

Glad you were part of it

That hill at the end was just plain EVIL!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for coming out and stepping up to the plate for the BT relay team.

I was so happy to see you...made the nerves a little more calm in the morning

Maybe we can do our first 26.2 part of our 140.6!!!!!

I still can't believe you just did the run.  Oh well.  BTers are nuts.  TriToy did exactly the same last year.

I was at the race the past 2 years - did the swim leg of the relay at their Inargural race, and volunteered last year.  Both times the finished had a good amount of volunteers.  Well, not so much last year as it was pouring and cold.  No announcer?  The first year when my teammate crossed the finish they called MY name (runner is a guy and they called out "DENISE").  LOL.
