Hello BT British Columbia !

This is my first post to BT, though I will admit to lurking for a few months - there I admitted it

I am a newcomer to this sport and wondered if there were any folks in the Surrey area that got together for a group ride or swim. I am a mid-40's male, and looking for a group to help motivate and keep me honest and on-track for a possible first triathlon in Langley in Aug (Walnut Grove).

Does anyone swim in White Rock/Crescent Beach? Using Google maps, I see it is a 20-km ride from where I am in Guildford.  Does it sound feasible to ride there, swim, then ride back??

Thanks for any and all info!

A great source of info for your area is the lady who runs the online triathlon store called Trigeeks. If you go onto her website, you may find some connections there.

Sorry I can't offer specifics for that area or info re training buddies. I have to train alone(from Burnaby) due to slow speed, 12 hour night shifts on rotating scheduele and children

Good luck in your quest !!

Welcome!

I know of a group that swims out of Fleetwood.  I will try to get more info for you.  Or, if you don't mind driving to N. Delta there is a group that swims Tuesday and Thursday (mornings or evenings) out of Sungod http://www.csca.org/sungods/

There is another group that meets out of Sungod called the Delta Retreads  http://www.deltamastersswimming.ca/.  I have heard good things about them.

Team Coastal has group rides out of Caps on Scott Road.  Their website is http://www.teamcoastalcycling.com/display/team/Welcome

If you don't mind going to Richmond, I highly recommend this group...Steveston Athletic Association http://www.thesaa.ca/  They are a great group of people and very supportive.  I drive from N. Delta to join them on their run and group rides.

Good luck and welcome to the sport.

I miss the Retreads. They were the first masters swim team that I joined and they are the friendliest group of people that I met. I still keep in touch with some of the people in the club, including the coach. Now I swim with the English Bay Swim Club and they are great too, but no one is as friendly as the Retreads. The price is really reasonable too.

Up until this year, I was a member of Team Coastal for 5 years. They are a good group of people too and a really big club. You'll find lots of triathletes in the club too. Actually, if you check them out, ask about Joyce. She knows a lot of people in that area and can introduce you to many groups there. I think a lot of the triathletes in Coastal run with Peninsula Runners.

Riding from Guildford to Crescent Beach/White Rock and swimming and riding back is definitely do able. I used to ride from North Delta to White Rock all of the time. I don't see many people swimming in Cresent Beach or White Rock, but I don't know why not. There is a swim group that swims in Kits beach all of the time and it's the same ocean.

I know the Surrey & Delta area really well, so PM me if you have any questions.

Arny, Kew, and Jeng,

Thank you very much for all of that info! I appreciate you taking the time to share so much, and there really is a wealth of stuff for a 'newbie' like me within those websites. The  trigeeks co. seem to be quite well-respected, based on comments I have seen in several threads.

I have gotten some info about a welcome/learn-to-ride program run through Team Coastal, so I will likely venture out with them to try a group ride. I really would like to get out with some people, but am a wee bit shy, and unsure of my ability to keep up!  I cycled out to Crescent Beach this afternoon, which was nice.....until the return! It seemed as though it was either uphill or downhill with no flat spots along the whole route...   Lots of work to do.

thanks again!!
