Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 53s
Overall Rank = 30/545
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 7/51
Pre-race routine:

Had bar and HEED at home before drive. Had Starbucks on the way there. A bit more HEED and a gel before start.
Event warmup:

Was running a little late. Biked just a little to calibrate meter, get shoes on bike, and get in right gear. Ran a little. Lake "closed" 10 minutes before start.
Swim
  • 08m 59s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wasn't wetsuit legal, so that's important to keep in mind. Swim a bit slower than last year, but swim/T1 combo a bit better. So in effect maybe I was swimming about as fast (just without wetsuit aid) and didn't have to spend as long getting the suit off. First time using speed suit.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Swim faster somehow.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Got out of transition pretty well I think, but then had trouble getting into shoes (left on bike with bands).
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting feet into shoes.
Bike
  • 36m 31s
  • 13.82 miles
  • 22.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Just didn't "have it" today. Should have been able to maintain a higher wattage.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting feet into shoes. Go harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 25m 30s
  • 3.52 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I think I was a puss here. Or maybe from heat and heavy training I didn't have another gear. Or maybe I'm so used to long races and cautious pacing that I was waiting. Or maybe I just didn't care enough.
What would you do differently?:

Push! Dig deeper!
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not sure. Lack of specific training. Recent orientation totally long distance. Recent heavy weeks. Being a pansy.

Event comments:

41 seconds better than last year, but I'm not too happy. I know I'm a crappy swimmer, but still would like to be better somehow. Bike improvement I expected, and should have been even faster. Run sucked. 36 seconds slower than last year, and that was too slow. I'm not sure what my problem was.

This lake's swim always dog's me, not sure why.  I have a much higher 100m splits at other races, even chicago with a 400y run - go figure.  Maybe it was the weeds!  Let's get ready for Muncie - I am sure you'll tear it up there.
