Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 8s
Overall Rank = 300/546
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 40/51
Pre-race routine:

The usual...wake up two cups of coffee and pop tart breakfast!
Event warmup:

Short run of about 1/2 mile and swim for a few minutes.
Swim
  • 28m 36s
  • 440 yards
  • 06m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, the first 200 yards went Ok and then for some reason I started having problems catching my breath. I've had sinus drainage for a while and it has flared up my Asthma at times. Well, I hung onto the pontoon boat at the turn around trying to catch my breath and tried several times to get going again and had to retreat back to the boat. Finally, I just started side stroking and luckily there were life guards out there with floaties...I just went from gaurd to guard and took short rests. This was by far the worst swim ever! Very difficult and I wanted to quit. But I did make it through it and made it out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

??? Get new lungs/Sinuses.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Bike
  • 37m 1s
  • 13.82 miles
  • 22.40 mile/hr
Comments:

I was a little tired from struggling on the swim but all in all not too bad.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Run
  • 23m 50s
  • 3.52 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Not bad but I certainly wanted to go much faster. Considering I was 4th in age group and 22nd overall in the run I gather that I was hillier than what I thought! So, I guess my performance was pretty good.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much just walk around and stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sinus/Asthma issues. This has got to get better. I may just have to sideline the swimming for now and just race Duathlons.

Well, some days are good and some days are well...not so good! I've been having sinus and Asthma issues lately and I thought that they were getting better. For some reason I got half way through the swim and just could not get my breath. I had sinus drainage and it was giving me fits trying to breath. I toughed it out and finished the swim but it wasn't pretty! I'm very embarrassed with my swim time.

I'm probably going to lay off of swimming for a while until this Sinus/Allergy/Asthma thing gets better. I'll just race duathlons for now.

Despite having a horrible swim and nearly exhausting myself trying to breath throughout it I did have a decent bike and run. I ended up having some pretty competitve bike and run times.

Sorry to hear about the swim issues, that bike and run would have put you well up there!  Good luck.

Thank you! I struggle with the idea of giving up on the swim and just racing Duathlons. It's hard to do that because I feel like I'm quiting something that I could eventually be decent at!

wow...i'm really impressed with your bike and run time.  it stinks that you had a bad day on the swim.  i wish that i could be half as fast in bike and run as you.  are you normally a pretty fast swimmer?  i wish that i could find more aqua/bike races around here...the running is what kills me.  Yell

I think most folks have their 'bad sport'. Mine is swimming. I'm normally about a 2:10 per 100 swimming in open water...sometimes slower! So, no I'm not fast in the water! The muncie endurathon has a nice auqabike. Good luck!
