Pre-race routine:

I was more relaxed before this race. I was able to eat dinner the night before and went to bed at about 11 without difficulty. Then the sleep interruption happened. I had some nightmare about not finding parking and not making it into transition on time. I didn't sleep well after that. I was up every hour after 3:30. I ate some more of my pasta.

I did get parking and made it to transition on time. I was going to make PB and J sandwiches, but the smell of peanut butter makes my friend nauseated, so I didn't make them. I set up my transition and got interviewed by NBC news in Philly. I never got to see it on TV and couldn't find it on the internet. Bummer.
Event warmup:

I got on my wetsuit and got into the schuykill river. It was really nice. I took a couple of strokes out and back and checked my goggles. I went back to my friends, ate a luna bar and a banana. I had a 35 min wait for my wave so I ate a few shot bloks.
Swim
  • 23m 56s
  • 900 meters
  • 02m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

I enjoyed being in the water. It was actually only my second tri swim since the St. A's swim was canceled. It was a far cry from my first tri swim where I paniced in the water. There was a current for the first half before rounding the bridge, then the current was with me. I wasn't fast, but I can get faster. I went at a speed coincident with my pool performance.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

Put my watch and HR monitor on since I wanted to monitor for training purposes. I didn't rush. My place in transition was right in the middle, so I had quite a run in my bike shoes in the mud. I was concerned they wouldn't clip in, but they did.
What would you do differently?:

I dunno. This isn't an area I'm trying to improve on much. I have other things that will cut my time more.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 44s
  • 14.91 miles
  • 13.61 mile/hr
Comments:

I just suck on the bike. My calves were really hurting at the beginning, but eventually stopped. I got the "on your left!" all throughout. I still had my brakes on during the downhills. I can't seem to allow myself to go fast. I couldn't even keep pace with a 73 year old woman. I wish I knew what I was doing wrong.
What would you do differently?:

I need to go faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

I didn't go too fast here either. I actually even grabbed my phone and put it in my back pouch. I grabbed the rest of my shot blocks and started running.
What would you do differently?:

I dunno
Run
  • 35m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I am just slow. What can I say. My legs felt bad for the first 2 miles and then got better. I am a little concerned about being able to do the run for an Oly, but I did it at St. A's so I guess I will get it done.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. I feel like a broken record.
Post race
Warm down:

I waited for my friends to finish and had a veggie sub. I wanted to get a massage, but my friends didn't want to, so I didn't. I went to transition, gathered my stuff and headed to the car. My friend wanted Gelato, so she got some, but I didn't want any.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm still trying to figure this one out. On the swim, I just need to work on improving my form and then speed. On the bike, fear is a factor. I am working to overcome that. I am sure some lessons would help too, because I am sure that I am doing something technically wrong. On the run, i just think it's genetics. I doubt I will ever be a fast runner.

Event comments:

Expo was weak. Only 1 vendor selling gear. Otherwise it was a good experience. Safe course with all closed roads. It was nice to be with my friends from HS. I just wish I felt like my hours of weekly training meant something. Sometimes I feel like I would have done the same with no training at all.

Great race.  I think I saw you on the news.  Did you mention something about biking?

I did mention biking.  They asked me a lot of questions, but I'm sure what aired was only a few secs.  I wish I could get my hands on it.

Congrats!

Nice job on feeling comfortable on the swim and swimming close to your pool pace (i typically swim slower than pool pace in tris).  I think in time you will feel more confident on the bike.

Sounds like you had a blast and spent time with friends...all very good!
