Subject: I think I had my first bonk last night!

So I decided instead of cycling to work I would run in to work (5K) and back home (5K also), I was also carrying a rucksack containing shoes, shirt and lunch which I don’t normally run with.

The run in at 9am in 20C/68F heat went ok 9:07p/mile, but the run home at about 4:30pm in 28C/82F was absolutely horrific!

I averaged 10:36p/mile whereas normally I would be around 8-8:30p/mile (see training logs) but as I had a backpack I would have been happy with 9-9:30 but not 10:36!

So I guess what I want to know is was I tired as it was my 2nd 5K of the day, or was it just the heat when I’m used to running in more like 15C/59F?

Will the heat always do this or am I just not fit enough to do two 5K runs in a day...you decide! (Don’t worry I will take it on the chin)

That's not bonking, but that is experiencing the difference in performance based on temperature.Although I'll be honest and say that I've never heard of 82F described as very hot before. Come over here here it's 105F.

No, that's not a bonk. That's heat getting to you but it's not bonking.

Bonking feels literally like a switch is thrown and you can no longer run at all. It's not even all that easy to walk. If you can still think straight, you probably didn't bonk.

Yeah, you need more running in the heat, hydrate more and remember to take in electrolytes either with the hydration or in addition to it.

Do you normally run in the mornings or later in the day. It might of also had to do with being tired from a work day or not eating or drinking much at work. Maybe going home is much more uphill than going into work. A lot of factors, but not a bonk.

Those videos are shocking now that is bonking! Poor them.

I had to walk at one point but nothing like that...and I hope I never have to go through what they did!

You'd better not be running solo...

82F???!!!  What's hot is relative I suppose

Running in much hotter weather than you're used to is going to really, really, really slow you down.  I run like a turtle with two broken legs after work anyway.  And I just sit at a desk all day.

Regarding what Sesh wrote, does anyone have any techniques to improve how you perform in the evenings because I too struggle after work and I also only sit at a desk all day.

It would be useful to know as I have an evening duathlon series I'm currently doing and I found the 2nd run really tough in round 1.

Find out how much you can drink right before a run and it starts to slosh around in your tummy. Then drink just a bit shy of that. Before long you'll find an almost magic point where you are hot and sweaty as all get out but it doesn't bother you near as much.

Remember, too, that hydrating is a "what you drank yesterday all the way to the beginning of the run" thing and not just what you drank as you were walking out the door.

My own experience has been that I have to run at that time of day and, eventually, I just get used to it. Most of my workouts are after work, and if I run, ride, or swim in the morning, I have a hard time. So, I have to make sure I do a couple of workouts a week in the morning since most races are in the morning.

I think it's just a matter of acclimating.

YMMV.
