Funny. Here around New Orleans it seems after ever road race or triathlon there are huge beer trucks for the post race party. The last tri I did they even had a table where they were making margarittas. Needless to say the party isnt over until the kegs are floated. Everyone there must average about 4-6 beers. Here is a youtube video put together from that race that is pretty entertaining of the race and post race party.......you can even see yours truely at 5:55 in the video. http://www.crawfishman.net/2009racevideos.htm

It's funny that you mention New Orleans. I have coined IM New Orleans 70.3 my hangover half. My wife caught the flu on Saturday (the night before the race), so I spent the afternoon on Bourbon street sampling the micro brews and hurricanes, followed by a couple of beers at the hotel pool. Although I didn't get trashed, I woke up at 4:30 AM on race-day with the worst headache. The swim and the first half of the bike was killer for me.

... next time I will stick to pasta and a glass of wine.

I personally enjoy beer (& there is only two kinds ~ cold beer or free beer), ESPECIALLY after a hard training session or race!  But for the ladies and/or men who do not prefer said beverages... here is an option.  I also have the best damn Fajita Recipe, which happens to go great with this as well!

Margarita Recipe

(servings 4)

1 cup Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice (approx. 6 limes)
1/3 cup Sugar
2 cups Water
5 oz. White/clear Tequila (doesn't have to be premium Tequila)
5 oz. Premium Triple Sec

Combine fresh lime juice with sugar and water and mix until sugar has dissolved.  Add Tequila and Triple Sec mix well. Place 1 cup of ice & 10 oz of mix in shaker and shake well.  Rim glass with lime juice and dip in margarita salt.  Fill glasses with ice then pour margarita over ice and enjoy!

In the spirit of Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that."

Not a conscious decision, but I have noticed that my consumption has been reduced since starting training.  However, I have to say I do like Saturday races...a nice big burger and fries with a few cold beers seems to taste even better after a race.  Plus, knowing the next day is a rest day always helps.

I haven't been drinking as much overall - I had a hard training day with not enough water and too much alcohol a few weeks ago and haven't touched the stuff since.

However, I'll be leaving for a Bahama cruise with 25 girlfriends in a week, I am sure that will rectify the situation Laughing

Only been training about 3 months, but the more I train, the more my body changes = the more I eat and the more beer I get to drink.  This training has been a great thing for me because I like to eat red meat and drink micro beers without gaining any weight.

Micro beers......good!!

I have never been a big drinker.  Sure there have been times were I partied way to hard, but those have been few and far between over my 35 years.  Moderation is key...I guess you just need to define moderation.  It only takes me 2 drinks to get drunk, so moderate drinking to me is about 1 beer per month.  I have 4 Guiness in the fridge that started as a 6 pack on Memorial Day.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Can't say I have that problem.  In fact, I now drink better beer as a reward for working out.  No more Miller Lite...only craft brews.

I have noticed that I do not drink much anymore, but was also working on losing 10lbs.  Guess for me personally I just do not want to feel bad the next day and ruin a training day.
Although, once IM is done, you betcha I am having a few cold beers/martini's.

I think I have the opposite problem. After a hard evening training session, nothing is more appealing to me than a cold beer beers w/ the occasional margarita backer.

Added a slight correction for you.

Guess my version of "balance" isn't as much about s/b/r ratios

I think you should go ahead and remove the "ooutd" from the middle of your BT id.

I have found that my tolerance for alcohol is nearly nil. I used to have no problem drinking 3 glasses of wine or beer with dinner but now I am totally loopy afterwards. One drink and I'm done.

I typically drink 1-2 beers or wine per evening.  On evenings when I do workout (Masters swim is in the evening), I typically only drink 1.   Only on unusual occasions will I drink more.

Regarding tolerance, I have a lot less now than before tris.  I went from about 25% body fat to single digits.  So I have less weight to buffer.  But its a noticable decrease in tolerance when in relatively good shape.

I have experienced the accidental decline in drinking due to training in a few cases.  One is when I have a big long run planned on a hot summer weekend morning.  Nothing sucks worse than running hungover at 6AM when it's hot.  It's not a problem so much in the winter   The second is I might find myself on the couch with a half-full glass of wine and sleeping, due to a hard workout that day.  In that case I just either finish up the one glass or dump it and go to bed.

However, I try to make up for it on other days

Fortunately I am not good at drinking during the day, so an after race/training ride beer never appeals to me.   It's a sure recipe for a nap and I hate naps.

Me too! An ice cold beer, glass of chardonnay or a margarita sure hit the spot after a workout!

bachorb - 2009-07-01 1:38 PM From March through November I won't have a single drop, then December-February I'll have maybe 1-2 drinks a week, but no more than that. I am a 25-year old guy so it's not always easy but I just have no desire to drink whatsoever.

To me to go through all this training, monitor my diet and everything else I do and then go slog back a beer is tantamount to buying a Ferrari then taking it home and pouring sand in the gas tank.
x2.  Just went through that last night with some coworkers I owed some reward for work well done.  One stinking belgian and some apps and my workout this AM sucked.  Could blame the apps too, but the few drinks I have had this year usually screw up the next days workout quality.  Time to change some habits IMO and its been for the better.  Between training and raising four daughters, i find the upside these days is limited vs the bad.  (And from a former beer snob of all people!)

My drinking hasn't changed at all.  An occasional beer, glass of wine or maragarita.  Or two.  Gotta live life a little.

Newleaf, that was absolutely hilarious!!! I HAVE to show my husband that, he would get a kick out of it. And you would probably be his new found hero… LOL that was great!!

Truthfully I usually down one after I get home for work and before I head off to the guy. I am trying to stop that, however sometimes I just can’t help myself. Beer; mm mm good!!
