Total Time = 3h 04m 26s
Overall Rank = 214/550
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 28/44
Pre-race routine:

Early up to get the breakfast down, met friend at Twin lakes resort, walked to start.
Event warmup:

Roast in the sun! First event I have been to with a 30 min start delay, The 9:00 am start makes sense to get everyone to the startline in time (assuming they can make it happen at 9:00), but add 30 min plus the 15 min for the wave(s) start and I'm going at 9:45. I heard it was hot last year, I was concerned about finishing around 12:45 - going to get a taste of what the Half Iron conditons felt like. Actually swam a few minutes to get acclimated.
Swim
  • 33m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Same challenge as most, could not get enough air. Felt altitude. I was considerably slower than my last event 3 weeks ago. Missing a breath due to a wave or another competitor would almost stop me in order to recover. Enjoyed the swim overall.
What would you do differently?:

Executed well, limited by my conditioning otherwise.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

A bit slow, fumbled a bit packing the wetsuit in the bag.
What would you do differently?:

Up sense of urgency a notch.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 28s
  • 28 miles
  • 18.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was my strongest leg today, although it was not strong. I laid off on the few climbs worrying about the hot run to come later. Held up several times due to congestion, half way in I had to adjust my expectations at this point and take it in stride. Beautiful course.
What would you do differently?:

Drop 10 lbs air pressure, the asphalt was rough.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Ok effort
What would you do differently?:

Up sense of urgency a notch.
Run
  • 56m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

1st mile was too fast, thought I was going to walk (passed dozens who did walk), backed it off and recovered to a pace I hoped to hold. Very humbling, it was hot and I did not get enough sunscreen on the back of my shoulders and lats, I felt some sunburn towards the end, chaffing along the edge of my top. No breeze in the woods. Thanks to the locals running the sprinklers, squirt guns, and water buckets. Saved my race! Last 1/4 mile was awesome support from spectators - cheering made the suffering go away, I finished through the chute strong.
What would you do differently?:

Executed well, limited by my conditioning otherwise.
Post race
Warm down:

Fluids, shaved ice

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Caught off guard by sun and altitude, although I likely performed close to my physical potential for that day, the mental effort was exceptional to overcome the higher than normal level of suffering to finish.

Event comments:

Most scenic course, hard to say if we will be back. The logistics present challenges getting to start and finish with family, etc. Staying in Sunriver seems to be the best way to do this event which raises the $$ commitment to compete.
