Subject: DNF'd Tri, Can I wear race t-shirt?
So I had an unfortunate cleat-dismantling incident in my race on Sunday and was forced to DNF. I've never DNF'd before. My question is, can I still wear the race t-shirt? My stance is that I had every intention of finishing, but was forced out by something beyond my control. Don't want to look like a poseur though if someone asks me about the race. What do ya'll think?

No.

You must burn it in sacrifice while dancing widdershins around it covered in chain grease chanting "Ironman, Ironman", or bad things will happen.

If you had quit 1/2 through the swim I would say "No, you probably shouldn't wear the shirt".

But you had an equipment manlfunction.  I think any reasonable person would be okay with you wearing it.

Go for it!

Are you serious?!  You've posted here 4,465 times and you still asked?!  :-)

It's a tee-shirt not a Purple Heart.  Wear it.  DNS is not so cut and dry but you raced the race!

Wear it. Honestly, no one is probably going to ask.

The only time I would NOT wear a shirt from a race I DNF'ed... would be if it was an Ironman or a Marathon. Otherwise, I'd DNF and wear the shirt/hat/etc.

I wouldn't. I would hate to have to explain to people what happened when they ask about the race.

But that is just me...

No.  It's bad luck.  Unless... you wear it with the lucky 13 race number.  That will cancel out the bad luck.

What do you see when you look in the mirror, wearing your Montclair T-shirt?  Do you see a poseur, or do you see awesomeness?  Will the T-shirt be a bitter reminder of dashed hopes, or will it spur you on to greater and better things?

It shouldn't matter that when you hang out with us and wear it, we will give you sh..., er, grief, about it.

What matters here, grasshopper, is what is in your soul.

All the best to you as you wrestle with this decision.

Is it a technical shirt?  If so - I'd probably keep it as a layer for training.

I have one race that I DNS-ed because of an injury.  It's a tech t-shirt and I wear it as a layer in the winter.  It doesn't say anything about the race on it - just "Cardiac Wellness Centre" so I don't feel so bad about it.

Hmm, I'm with you on this one.  Up until now I've said no, don't wear the shirt but after last weekend I'm not so sure I still hold that opinion. I know many people that've not finished WS 100 and proudly wear the gear, you have to qualify and get your name picked to race it, furthermore 57% did NOT finish the race this year, including Dean Karnazes (50 marathons 50 days guy) and Scott Jurek (7 time WS winner).  I'm tempted to wear the gear, but I'll also be the first to explain I've not finished the race....YET

Furthermore I did not quit, I was forced stop by the medical staff, can't hold this trix down.

Uhm, didn't you run, like 49 miles of that race? If ANYONE were to question you wearing the gear it should be pretty easy for you to say "you go run 49 f-ing miles up some crazy mountain and come back and tell me how YOU feel".

If you really wanted to finish, you would have run over to the bike shop setup near transition and bought a new cleat, bleeding all over yourself haha.

I've never ever gotten asked about a race when I've worn a race shirt...except for the one time I was wearing a boyfriend's race shirt (I never even did the race; unfortunately, I wasn't even there to see him do it). Someone standing behind me on an escalator saw it and was like, "Oh, I've heard that's a great race, how was it?"

I think you're OK to wear the shirt.

I dropped out of E-Man last year.  Still wear the shirt.  Same with Du Nationals this year.

It's a frickin' piece of clothing.  You get it for paying the entry fee in the majority of races.  Wear it all you want!

Sorry, according to Bad Ben the answer is "No" unless you write "DNF" in prominent black letters on the shirt.  See rule number 6.  It's proper etiquette you know.

http://badbenkc.blogspot.com/2007/09/proper-t-shirt-etiquette.html

Wear what you want.  My DNF shirts become rags.  T-shirts don't get compliments from my wife so they have to justify their existence in my closet with sentimental value.
