Hi,
I am doing my first triathlon in about 7 weeks, the Dog Days Triathlon.  I am starting to get a little panicky.  I guess my goal is just going to be to finish this thing!  I was going to do a 5K and then several of my friends did triathlons and I thought, hey, that would be a challenge...I am 41, and in pretty good shape-but just started running in March-have run off and on through the years and love it, and biking, I endure swimming and fortunately the swim is only 160 meters.  Anyone else doing the Dog Days Triathlon?  Nichi

Nichi,

Dog Daze is a fun race. Almost half the people that did it last year were first timers so you won't be alone. With your first tri the important thing is to have fun. Enjoy the atmosphere and have a good race. See you there.

Buc,

Thanks for the encouragement.  I have been reading all of the first timer stories on BT and that is encouraging, too.  Had a great long ride today-cooler temps.  I really do think it will be fun!
My mantra will be, "this is fun, this is fun, this is fun!"  not "this is crazy, what am I doing?"
See you there.

I did the Belmond Tri 2 years ago - my wife is from Belmond, so it's a good reason to spend the weekend there. It's a fun race, and it's short, so it doesn't wipe out your whole day. It's a fun experience. They even had a lot of SWAG 2 years ago. There is also a big drawing afterwards where it seemed like half of the competitors won something. And yes, there are many first-timers, so you won't be alone!

SWAG is the goodies you get for being in the race. They gave out a TON of door prizes (SWAG) last year if you stayed til after the award ceremony. Most races give a goody bag with t-shirt, water bottle, discount coupons from local businesses, etc. That is SWAG.

Check out www.fitnesssports.com. They have most of the races (road, du, and tri) in the area listed there. The ones that I saw from just a quick glance at the site were:

Iowaman in Davenport on Sept 12 (400 swim, 20k bike, 5k run)
Lamars YMCA in Lamars on Sept 12 (300y, 11M, 5k)
Cy Man in Polk City on Sept 13 (500y, 14.3M, 5k)
Knoxville Sprint Tri on Sept 19 (300y, 14M, 5k)
Trihawks, Iowa City, Sept 20 (500y, 15M, 5k)

There are also a couple of duathlons (run/bike/run):
D.O.athlon for Life, West Des Moines, Sept 13 (5k, 20k, 5k)
Waukon Wellness Center Duathlon, Waukon, Sept 19 (5k, 10k, 3k)

Stinkfoot 5k, October 4 @ 8:00 am, Lion's Park, Altoona. altoonatriathlonclub.com
My tri club is hosting a 5k with the proceeds going to help fund the weightroom at the new high school.

Buc,

Thanks much for the info and  the website!  I didn't know there were so many options out there for races-pleasant surprise! Now I can pick one for every month until next year! Have a great day tomorrow.
