Subject: Swimming help-training help needed
Hi all...
I posted a couple of times in the past about my swimming and am just now, after a month feeling comfortable enough in the water to start thinking of building my endurance. Seriously...I can swim 50 yards without breathing like I am dying. I bike, (not competitively...but I bike 20 miles fairly easily) and run (10 minute miles). Neither of these things is hard for me, but holy cow the swimming is ridiculous! I can now freestyle a bit and have had a swimming instructor look at my stroke. I was told I look good and just need to swim more.

I need training program that doesn't start with swimming 800 meters! I can't find one that is geared for the true beginner. It would be a great goal to be able to do 400 meters in the next month without stopping, but I have no idea how to get there! Did anyone start where I am starting? (Im sure someone did) and what did you do to improve endurance and breath control? If I have a DOABLE training program, I'll laminate it, take it to the pool and I'll stick to it. The ones I see seem sooo overwhelming. Any suggestions? I am able to swim 3 days a week at this point. That is when the pool is open.

Thanks!

If you can swim 50 yds then you can do a 800 yd workout. Don't get overwhelmed by the thought of 800 yds. Try this for a workout.

Warm-up -
12 x 25 @ :30 rest (30 sec rest after each 25)
Do the warm-up using any stroke including dog paddle if you want but make each 25 easy.

Kick set -
4 x 25 @ :30 rest (Preferably flutter kick but any kick will do)

Main set -
2 x 25 @ :30 rest freestyle (Count how many strokes it takes you for each 25)
2 x 50 @ 1:00 rest (Try to keep your stroke long)
2 x 25 @ :30 rest
2 x 50 @ 1:00 rest

Cool down -
4 x 25 Easy or 1 x 100 Easy

Give that a try and see if you surprise yourself.

The beginner swim program on this site does not start with 800meters and it is an awesome program...it helped me a lot.

Thank you to both of you. Bob, (or anyone who knows the answer!) is that a rest after each length? I think so, but am not completely sure.

Yes, you are new to swimming and will want/need the rest after each 25.  Eventually you will get to doig them without wanting or needing so much rest.

I learned enough to keep from drowning as a kid and have worked the past few years with a coach at my gym.  He took my stroke from a step above dog paddle to a nice stoke ( though you wouldn't know it from this years races   )  Good luck and have fun!

Also, don't be so focused on swim volume as you are new. Simply focus on good technique, get a few swim lessons soon so you don't ingrain bad habits that will be harder to break later after thousands of yards with bad form.

You can go faster in the water with no fitness gains by simply getting better technique, slowing down your stroke, and getting longer in the water.

I literally had to re-learn to swim when I got into this sport in Feb. Not having access to an affordable coach or swimming program I picked up a copy of Total Immersion which I think was a huge help.  The book/videos are all about swimming more efficiently as opposed to swimming harder and for me, the drills made a huge different.  I would recommend that book.  There are also tons of videos on the net that show good form and demostrate drills that can help you hone your form.

I definately agree with everyone else on here, do not swim for distance if you are still learning/fixing your form.  If you start swimming longer distances with a bad form you'll have a tough time fixing it later.  Start slow, resting when you feel you need to.  Focus on your form and try to notice what feels smoother as you perfect your stroke.  I found a mix of drills and swimming laps helped a lot.

Just my 2 cents, stick with it and I'm sure you'll improve in no time.

I started like you several months ago.  When I started, I could only swim three laps in a 25yd pool.  Now, I'm up to 2500yds.  With that being said, take lessons and learn the proper technique.  It will make you much more efficient as  you build endurance.  I just joined a masters swim team and wish I had done it months ago.  My technique was rebuilt by the coach and I have a more difficult time swimming the longer distances, but I am confident that I will be a faster and more efficient swimmer in the long run.  I wish I started with a coach months ago.
