Pre-race routine:

Well this was my first race so I didn't have too much of a routine set up. I was still pretty tired from my last bout of malaria and only decided Saturday night to actually do the race. Got everything together and went to bed about 10. The alarm went off at 2:45 so I got up and got dressed. Ate a banana in the car and then because there was no traffic we got to Denver about 1 hr early we went to waffle house to eat. I had some eggs and a waffle and some bacon. Got to the event site at 5. Biked the 1 mile to transition and set up my TA.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Some streching and walking. There was no swim warmup so just tried to move around. Got herded into the swim start area and couldn't do much else.
Swim
  • 26m 54s
  • 750 yards
  • 03m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well I had no open water swim practice and only one swim with the wetsuit. All in all it went well. I could not keep my head in the water though. So I swam the whole way on my back or with my head out of the water. Had no problems with navigating even with doing backstroke. Rounded each bouy right on it.
What would you do differently?:

Practice open water swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

There was about a 100 yd run over rock and concrete - not comfortable at all. Saw some folks had stashed flip flops. Maybe do that on this course again? I need new cycling shoes. Mine are my dad's old ones that lace up. That slowed me down.
What would you do differently?:

New shoes. Maybe some flips for post swim?
Bike
  • 48m 3s
  • 10 miles
  • 12.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was good. Could not eat the Luna bars. I need to find something that tastes like food to eat on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

New shoes and pedals. Learn how to climb.
Transition 2
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Kept everything together. But my legs were too rubbery to do much running. About ate the deck at first.
What would you do differently?:

Do a transition at some point outside of the race.
Run
  • 43m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow this sucked. Could barely run at all. Mostly shuffled. Started running 20 concrete blocks and walking 10. Then worked only for the first 1.5 miles or so. After that walk breaks kept getting longer.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. I could've really pushed the run faster but didn't. Oh well.
Post race
Warm down:

Ummm... walked around. Ate some oranges and half a banana. Drank some liquid. That was about it. Grabbed my bike and then walked back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. The last three weeks have been pretty much garbage. The malaria pretty much just wiped any endurance I had.
