running2far - 2009-07-06 9:15 AM Really there is no need for balloons, sky writing, and billboards. Just take the time and walk your route to your bike 5-10 times. You'll be all set.

x2. I've seen some pretty obnoxious chalk markings and duct tape at local races, which I think are completely un-necessary and scream "look at me! I don't know where my bike is!" more than anything. I don't see what's so hard about counting the racks from the swim exit?

I 'll just scream outloud- "LOOK AT ME< I DON'T KNOW WHERE MY STUFF IS!" "Can anyone see a red and black Aloha... it's got Aero bars and a black saddle"- It should be next to a pair of sneakers and has a helmet on it... " anyone, anyone...

PennState - 2009-07-06 10:17 AM 1,998 raced Steelhead last year (was a Du not a tri). We will see this year Bear.

I thought I read somewhere that they were limiting it to 1800 this year due to the drafting on the course?

So how did you find your bikes in transition if it's so huge?

ETA: Found it!!http://www..com/2008/09/ironman_703_steelhead_is_open_smaller_capacity_in_2009.htm

Also remember to keep to your territory during the transitions.  I was really annoyed during my race a few weeks ago to come to the rack in T2 and have my 'neighbor's' stuff all over my area and on top of my towel - I basically had to lay down my bike to move her things so I could rack my bike.  It must have been so nice and spacious for her in transition (I beat her out of T1 and T2) maybe she forgot others were racing too!?!

1492 finishers at IM Kansas 70.3 (2009)... There was literally no room for buckets or balloons or sidewalk chalk whatsoever in T1. It was amazingly crowded... handlebar-to-handlebars touching. Literally not a centimeter inbetween bikes. Quite impressive, actually:

Harder to count racks in somes TAs than others...I'll freely admit to having chalked my initials on the pavement at a couple races.  Some races have policies against that, though, and it's worth considering the mess it leaves behind in some park's parking lot.  And some races definitely have policies against tying anything to the rack (I've seen volunteers go through and ask people to remove things at one race).

In regard to an earlier comment about Yankz:  They aren't going to keep your calves from cramping any more than shoelaces...I had that happen in a race this year and was using Yankz.  The problem actually was worse with Yankz because of the pressure I was exerting downward with my calf to slip the heel into the shoe against the resistance of the elastic...that wouldn't have been an issue with laces, actually.  On a couple occasions when I thought I was going to have a problem I just threw pride to the wind and plopped my butt down on the ground.  No buckets, though, please...not enough space as it is.

And try to avoid the dishpan full of water to wash feet:  I used to use a very small one but stopped because it's just a headache.  At a race last week, a guy two spots over accidentally tipped his over and flooded the gear of the guy in between us (who was away from his setup at the time)...big mess.  My wife and I had to grab our stuff out of the way of the approaching "tide" and help him mop up.

Definitely will be an adjustment, as Steelhead is usually the largest 70.3 (as far as # of entrants).

We (officials) were told that IMNO was the biggest 70.3 with I think 2800 allowed to register, (2,312 finishers). How many are allowed in Steelhead?

Transition at IMNO was massive. I would have needed a GPS locator to find my rack.

Augusta 70.6 is now the largest...about 3200 or so registered (and that's not the final tally). Originally slated for 2500, i believe, but they let the flood gates open...

I'm curious how long it will take me to find my bike at the Augusta 70.3.  Being that the Kansas 70.3 TA looks enormous, Augusta will be even larger than that- YIKES!

3200 is bound to leave a bad taste in your mouth. Maybe it will be ok... but would make me shy away from enterring.

Maybe some people like doing races with larger numbers?

well, i signed up early, not thinking they'd open the field up to that many athletes. can't bail now...but, since it'll be my first HIM, it's going to be great!

The TA for Augusta 70.3 is a road rather than a large area.  It's only a 2 lane width.  My guess it that the TA will be VERY narrow and LOOONGG.  Should make things interesting.  I guess we can expect longer transition times.  I'm going to have to look for a unique funky towel that will stick out amogst all the others or else I'm going to be in trouble

I'm still mad they extended the size though. I really don't think there was a need for it.

So I googled pictures of Steelhead and found several different ways to organize transition.

Anyone know how they are organized this year?  One year it was by wave, another by your #...

Silly question - why do bar ends need to be plugged?

halfpint - 2009-07-06 9:02 AM as far as marking, i doubt you could do that successfully in transition...just user your towel/mat and use that as your "space".

in the racks, theres usually a predetermined # of bikes that need to be on there and if you take up too much space, i'm sure you'll find your stuff scooted over if you seem to be intruding.

As far as marking your rack line...tie balloons, bandanas, etc to the rack end

At first glance, I read this as tying BANANAS to the rack end.  Which would be pretty funny, if you ask me.  Grab it on the way in to T1 to refuel!

So you don't bore out a core sample from anyone if you crash.  Seriously.

I did the rack count thing.  It didnt work for me.  There were 2 seperate transition areas.  I counted 4 bars after setting up T2 with toewl and my running shoes.  There are 2 different transition areas in this race so when I got to my rack my stuff was gone.  I counted twice...nope no running shoes.  I then frantically began running p and down the rack looking for my stuff I counted again.....ahhh there it is kicked under the rack with a mountain bike on top of my shoes.  The moutnian bike had the advantage of not having to set up a T2 sice they biked in their running shoes...  saw an open space and yup didnt matter that I had claimed this area.....Ill just take his space!!!  As you can see I am still a little miffed about it...cost me about2 1/2 mins extra in T2

Next time you can just snipe his tires from 1/2 a mile... no one will know it was you... or will they?  Can you add alog range rifle and scope in your transition area... yeah, but it owuld be tough to stash the spotter!
