Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 600 and showered. Got to the race and checked in. Forgot to take my GU. I wasn't nervous for this race because I had very little expectations. I hadn't trained for about two weeks prior to this race because I was on vacation so I just hoped my fitness was not lost. I was the fifth wave of seven to go off so I had plenty of time to wait around and second guess myself!
Event warmup:

Swam a quick 100 meters in the pool. Felt good at the time.

  • 820 yards

Comments:

Man I stink in the water. I'm sure my lack of swim training hurt me, but this was a pool swim I needed to push a lot faster than that. I still haven't found my race pace and obviously went way too easy today. This was my first time in a 50 meter pool and those laps are looooooong. I miss my 25 meter pool. I felt my form getting sloppy at the end of the swim so I was glad it was only 750 meters.
What would you do differently?:

Be Michael Phelps.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

My T1 time is from the first step I left the pool. It was a long run to the transition which took about a minute. Nothing major to report here. Had some trouble mounting after I got onto the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Initially I was disappointed with my bike effort today, but when I looked over the results I am actually proud of it. The course made this a slower ride than I would have liked, but that affected everyone. This is the first time that my bike split has placed better than my run split. Usually I lose time on the bike and make it up on the run, but today it was the opposite!

My first triathlon this year was paper flat and this was much different. The first half of the course was a series of downhills and slight uphills. I really didn't prepare as well as I should have for some of the false flats and rollers because I found myself in the wrong gear climbing. I think I could have gone faster, but I don't think I had the right attitude on the bike. My cousin said I was the second person in my wave to get off the bike so I must have done something right!
What would you do differently?:

Climb smarter, have a better attitue.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

Bike shoes off, helmet off, run shoes on, GO.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 22m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Poor run for me today. I was all alone on that course because of the wave systems so I really had no gauge of my speed. I didn't push myself until the very end when I started puking about 50 yards from the finish. I have a penchant for puking right before the finish. Definitely a run to forget.
What would you do differently?:

No clue why I was so slow.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and changed out of my tri suit as soon as possible. Wasn't in the mood for the food they were serving because I have just puked so I waited around to see the results. 5th in my AG is about what I figured with the slow swim and run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a B race and a tuneup race for my big Olympic in late July so I definitely didn't come into this race with any allusions of grandeur, but I still can't help but be a little disappointed. It was a good motivator to ramp up the training. The only positive I can take from this race is my bike placing - I did not expect to have such a solid bike compared to the rest of the field.

Well done.  Looks like the bike time is getting faster. Sometimes the run suffers after a hard bike effort.  Congrats on 5th!
