I know this has been discussed before but not an hour ago I saw a guy come INCHES from plowing into the back of a tractor trailer all becuase we has texting.  I was driving beside him and saw him doing it.  He looks up and the tractor trailer is at a dead stop in front of him.  He has to slam on the brakes and go over into the center turn lane (suicide lane) to avoid the truck.  he was probably still going 40 when he passed the back end of the truck.

Part of me wishes he had totaled his car to teach him a lesson.  What if someone else had been in the turn lane?  What if the truck driver had broken down and has been standing in the turn lane?

All becuase he had to text his BFF about some LOLs.... figgin' idiot...

Funny you should mention that, they just passed a no texting law in Virginia.  I'm still waiting for the ban on all cell phones that aren't hands free...

I used to be guilty of this myself.  Not texting, but emailing. My work e-mails come to my phone and I USED to answer them while driving.  A couple of near accidents, and I don't do it anymore.  It either waits until I get to my destination or I find a place to pull over.

Same in Chicago, although not enforced.

There was a cyclist death in Michigan that was the result of teenager texting and slaming into a rider.

I don't get it, what so important you need to text and drive.

I wondered if he "texted Tony" after that incident. *inside joke*

Here's some info:
"... Texting while driving becomes illegal for all drivers in Tennessee, Virginia and Utah. Novice drivers with a provisional or learner’s permit will be banned from text messaging while driving in Mississippi. Cell phone and texting while driving restrictions take effect in a number of other states later this year...."

IMO, its very rarely important that people get the text out.  I just think most people texting while driving have a "nothing will happen" mindset.

At least around here, depending on the time of day, weather, etc, a 30 minute commute home can easily turn into a 2 hour commute home.  Some people LIVE on their blackberrys, and two hours disconnected from their email would be blasphemy.  If it's so important, just pull over, send your email, and get back on the road.

I just wish it could be a little more strictly enforced.  I still see way too many people nearly getting into accidents who are on their phone.  The best is the startled look they give, like they've done nothing wrong, when people go by and either honk or yell at them...not that I would know about doing such things.  Innocent

Texting while driving nearly killed myself and my sons.  Needless to say I'm not a fan.  We were t-boned by a guy running a stop sign because he was texting.  Car rolled 4 times.  We all had to go the hospital, my car was totaled.  It's a miracle we're alive.

I think the hard part is enforcing it as a law.

A friend of mine recently lost a former co-worker due to texting.  The guy was 38, married, had children, and had just accepted a very senior role with another organization.

Two lane road, he was texting, crossed the center line, and hit a truck head-on...driver of the truck saw the guy's head down and could do nothing...they found the unfinished message on the open phone.

Talk about scared straight...that did it for me.

Wouldn't it be grand if cell phone manufacturers would implement an odometer of sorts into phones? Like if it can tell if you're traveling faster than a brisk walk, the texting feature would automatically turn off?

I text while driving sometimes but have come to realize with all the news surrounding it that it obviously isn't too safe.  A few close calls and I'm stopping.

I can respond at a traffic light or when I get home. I think its funyn how tied we are too all of our communication devices.

A friend of mine got a text from her daughter that she had been in an accident because she was texting, as she tried to respond (via text), she rear ended someone else. Bye Bye BMW!

That sounds like an urban legend, but then again it can be so true. Maybe that's why it's sounds like one.

While driving you have only one job to do: drive! Even changing radio station can be risky if done at a wrong time. If killing yourself or others is not for you a priority than the rest can wait. Always be careful, whatever you're doing.

MY company has a 'rule' that talking on the cell while driving is prohibited. Not sure about texting....Hard to enforce though. Common sense should rule.

Supposed to be banned in Illinois as well, but is never enforced.   I got hit 3 days ago running by a woman who rolled through a stop sign while texting, before a Cubs game as well.  Traffic was already crazy in my neighborhood.  I went up on her hood and rolled off the other side.  No damage was done to me and I think it scared her more than me.  However, I don't think I've ever been that mad before.  If it was a dude driving I probably would have punched him through the open drivers side window.

Long story short, it is an idiotic and dangerous thing to do and you are going to either kill yourself or somebody else.  Pay attention to the road.
