Subject: People beg for my problem...
Hello,

I'm thinking about getting back into triathlons after a 10 year layoff but I've got a special concern-- losing weight! I'm 6'3" 155lb (when soaking wet) and I pretty much eat when I'm hungry-- stop when I'm full. In the last couple of years I've gotten heavily into cycling and I've tried hard to make sure I get enough calories. I'm doing ok but I'm afraid with the extra training I'll begin to lose weight.

I know it sounds crazy but how do you make sure you get enough good nutrition? I'm not looking for a magic pill but it seems like it shouldn't be that difficult to get enough carbs/protein/calories. Suggestions?

Chuckie

You know Chucki, I had that "problem" for the longest time. People kept telling me: "Hey, you're too skinny, you have to put on weight!" Well, I did...and I put on some more weight...and I got older and wider (not wiser)! So now I weigh 210 (6') and wish I had your "problem". Eat a lot of deep fried foods and drink plenty of beer and wine...good luck! ;-)

Perhaps this will be helpful:

http://www.room42.com/nutrition/basal.shtml

It helps you calculate the minimum number of calories you need as an athletic person to maintain weight, and it gives distribution of fats, proteins and carbs.

(It also gives you what you need to lose as well, but obviously not your issue!)

Welcome back to the sport!

I am having the same problem, 130 at 6'00, a few jars of peanut butter and 15 gallons of whey protein, 140lbs at 6'1. This is just advice (not a dr.) you might want to try taking a weight gainer, MHP MASS is some great stuff. Its low glycemic with 58 g. of carbs 11g fat 46g protein, and 510 calories. If an extra 500 cal a day doesnt work, you can always trying eating plain peanut butter with a spoon. It worked for me..lol

I am a big fan of Myoplex Sport. It has 500cal, 33g protien, 76g of carbs. It mixes up a little thck, but it pretty decent. In addition to that, I try to make sure that I eat whatever I burn.

Thanks Dana for the website. While I don't have the same problem I am worried about losing weight too fast. I've lost about 14 pounds since Feb. 9. That's about 2.3 pounds a week. Is that too much?

My goal is to lose 100 overall. (I started at 260 and am now at 232 but have only been tracking my weightloss since Feb. 9). Even though I eat all the time it seems. Good stuff. Sometimes I feel I don't get enough calories. I notice it mostly in my workouts. I have to force myself to eat because I feel like if I eat I won't keep losing weight then I'll get depressed. But it's crazy. I'm burning a ridiculous amounts of calories and I only eat about 1000 to 1200 calories a day. But the weekends are my refuge. I get to eat whatever I want! And it seems to work for me!

Ovetta.

Thank you all for your input. Aside from common sense, I am really naive to the whole nutrition thing. For example, I have *no idea* how many calories I consume or expend in a day. No clue. I'm a bit afraid of the protein powders etc. because it seems like such a "weird" world of scientific, jargony, speciality store, bodybuilding silliness. Essentially it's all just food and I can't see how whey protein or some powdered nutrition suppliment could hurt me. Unless it could... ? Anyone know any better?

Unless your lactointollerant (cant spell good) or it has phormones in it its the same as eating lean meat. So your safe with whey.

Ovetta--

I wouldn't worry about the rapid weight loss for the first 2 months or so, but it should taper off a bit, especially once you lose the first ... ~10%. Maybe 1-2 pounds per week. I would actually recommend you having at least 1300 calories, unless you have a really small frame. We are actually in almost the same exact boat. I strive for the following, myself, and continue to lose weight:

1500 calories (1400 minimum)
65% carb
15% protein
20% fats

I normally am shy of fats and over on protein, but that's what my goals are. I don't worry to much about being over on the protein, as I don't want to lose muscle mass with the fat...

In any case, keep me posted on how the weight loss is going!! I started at 270ish and am down to 230ish.

Go, girl!!

It's funny, I have more trouble with this when I DON'T workout, because I don't have as much appetite. But when I was running middle distance my teammates and I sometimes had trouble keeping weight on. I know runners are supposed to be skinny, but after a certain point it just makes you weak, and if you're doing multisport anything you need that muscle strength and endurance. We used commercial protein powders to make milkshakes a few times a day - you can get GNC or other brands in whatever flavor you like. Get small amounts to try it out, because if it tastes bad it becomes repulsive really fast.

At other points I've just had a few glasses of whole milk a day to keep up my calories and done fine with that. Cheaper too. I seem to have leveled out at about 135, 5'8" (that's ~61k, 173cm for you anti-imperialists), and I think it's from lifting weights. The extra muscle mass probably increases my metabolism but it also makes me hungrier so I eat better when I'm lifting regularly. Now go get fatter!

Ahhh...to have a problem with being skinny. I think you are now the 2dn person I know who is actively trying to gain weight. I, ony the other hand, am pursing a steady weight loss. I'm not fat---5'5"/127--but I want to cut my body fat percentage. I have to say that training has been awesome for me in that respect. I've been losing about a pound to 2 pounds a week, which, I think, Is a nice healthy rate of weight loss. The greatest thing about it: I'm NOT on a DIET!!! I simply stay concious of how many calories are in the foods I eat, and concentrate on eating lots of whole foods. Ahh....I can't wait until the summer! Yay for the beach!!

if your looking for a cost efficient (and healthy) way of adding on weight, stop by your local costco and pick up the "kirkland health shakes," which are essentially their version of slim fast. it's a great in-between-meal snack replacement that will help you with the extra calories (energy) and healthy vitamins.
