Overcast
Total Time = 2h 28m 28s
Overall Rank = 129/778
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 21/126
Pre-race routine:

Wake-up, set up transition. Eat PB&J waffle and coffee. Sip on some water and talk to folks.
Event warmup:

Not really anything since it was a closed swim start and didn't really get going until around 7:40.
Swim
  • 22m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wish for once I could get myself into the current to get some free speed. I know that the current is better by the buoys, but every year I still seem to swim closer to shore. Oh well. Good swim overall.
What would you do differently?:

Swim by the buoys and maybe push a little more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Better than last year and this is a big transition area, so this is not too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 29s
  • 26 miles
  • 21.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good and strong on the bike and passed a lot of people and got passed by very few. Kept waiting for some of the other guys from NAMC to come roaring by, but managed to hold them off, so I felt good about that. There were some random big gusts of wind on the way back in from the front coming in that pushed me around a little. Lost my water bottle on one of the massive gaps on one of the bridges, so I didn't get to take in as much liquid as I would have liked.
What would you do differently?:

Not a whole lot really. I think I pushed just hard enough to have a good ride and still have enough left for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Had to move the trashbag off the running shoes since I had covered them as I wasn't in the mood for a repeat of last year (shoeless joe blackmon :))
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 49m 42s
  • 6.22 miles
  • 07m  min/mile
Comments:

First 4.5 miles or so were good, but just started feeling the push on the bike in the last couple. Just held on as much as I could, but couldn't quite get the elusive sub 8 run on an Oly. I guess 7.99678 minutes per mile is techincally sub 8, but the whole rounding thing just doesn't work in my favor.
What would you do differently?:

I would like to say I would hold back a little on the bike to have enough to finish the run strong, but I think I actually picked up more time on the bike than if I had held back.
Post race
Warm down:

Get lots of water. Stretch. Watch NAMC folks come in, then for a quick shower and more stretching and water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

Always like this race. It is a big race atmosphere for just an oly. I really enjoy this whole setup. If only they could find a more interesting bike course. ;)

Performance: Good

Course: Point to point downstream. Apparently there was a good current, or so I heard out by the buoys, but strangely, but kayaks were pushing people back towards shore (away from the buoys and current). I wish I had ignored them and just swam by the buoys to get some free speed. Climb cement stairs at exit.

Great race.  Times are eerily similar to mine.  Congrats on qualifying for AG Nationals.  I hope you are going to be there too.

I'll say it again.  That was a great race.  Next time, you need to join me towards the middle of the river.  I definitely caught more current to have that close of a swim to yours.

Nice job.

I did this race too.
If you want big race atmosphere for "just" and Olympic distance race, you should check out the Chicago Triathlon.

Exciting Big city setting, HUGE transition area, big spectator crowd, a large triathlon expo with many (100s?) of interesting vendor booths.

The run from the swim into T1 is lots longer than in Chattanooga (Chattanooga doesn't even seem that long), but that is part of the uniqueness of the race.

Fantastic race. Technically it's not an Olympic, and that makes your time that much more impressive. The extra 2k on the bike counts.

I'm not a comparable swimmer, but I always end up closer to shore than the bouys. I think part of the deal is that the current actually pushes slightly in that direction.

Great race!  congratulations on nationals.  Great pace on the bike, had you not felt it then you went too slow.
