Overall Rank = 49/1400
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/150
Pre-race routine:

Was at the Big Gig concert with my son the night before until 10:30.
Got up at 3:20 and packed up the car and ate one waffle, mix shake and some coffee, and half a banana.
Drove up early to get a good TZ spot.
Event warmup:

Found my TZ spot on the end rack where I like it.
Ran a bout a mile with Mike Ricci and then went to get my wetsuit on and get out of transition.
Swim
  • 31m 20s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just swam, felt pretty good. Not much bumping as I started out front of the wave. Kicked hard on the way in after the last bouy. Stood up and the watch said 30 minutes. Damn is that slow. But I thought oh well just keep moving so I ran up the hill hard and got the wetsuit down to the waist and ran hard to T1.
Last year I was 25:48. So slower by almost 6 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. Course was 3 minutes long for sure. Everyones times reflected this. I can do better here.
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Had a quick T1 one guy in my Agegroup was faster. So I did better here than usual.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 1s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 23.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Had some trouble getting into the shoes. but got in them before exiting the rez. Passed some people then a guy came by me and I let him go. Just stayed steady up Jay rd. and 36. Got onto Lee rd heading towards olde stage. Slow uphill so I just stayed aero and steady nothing hard yet. Peddaled a bit harder to pass some folks and just spun up olde stage at a good rhythm. Passed the guy who passed me on the rez road.
GOt over olde stage and had no computer to know how fast I was going so just stayed with some guy that went by me. after the Police radar area I got on it and passed dude that went by me. GOt to the bottom of left hand canyon and saw a cop in the road who was holding up the cyclists. I locked it up and skidded for about 50 feet and almost hit the girl in front of me. A bunch of fast 25 year old were there cussing up a storm. I was pretty mad too. WTF is that about. Was there anywhere between 30-60 seconds. Llst time trying to get back up to speed. THe 2 25 year olds decided to draft off of each other and motor away. Nice! Cheaters. Went hard on Neva or what ever the road was and stayed steady on the rollers on the back side. Had 2 more guys pass me on 36 but I let them go. Caught them again on the road into the rez. Got out of my shoes and dismounted with a flying dismount. Ran hard to T2 as I wanted to be the fastest there.
Last year I was 1:11:11. Faster by 3 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Paced the bike well to run well.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

Fastest in the agegroup and faster than all the pros!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 41m 15s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Started conservative as I wanted to negative split. Picked up the pace through out and passed Ricci at mile 2 and was not passed by anyone in my agegroup. Got passed by about 5 guys that were in 25-29 agegroup. Decent run considering I have not run as much as I would like. Just stayed steady but hard. Mile splits- 1-6:41 2-6:38, 3-6:48, 4-6:32, 5-6:50, 6.1-7:45. So it looks like I even split about right on. Didn't have anything left to push to the end but didn"t need it. Missed 3rd place in the agegroup by 20 seconds. He was fading fast but not anough room to catch him. Last year I was 44:33 so about 3:15 faster this year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming and running. Overall conditioning is pretty good at this point.

Event comments:

Hung out with lots of Bters and friends and had a few Avery beers. Stuck around for awards and won a fuel belt!
Was dissapointed in the stop on 36 and the course was not swept. Other than that it is a great race with stiff competition. My wife Michele Pr'ed by 8 minutes!

Great job Mark!!  That's ridiculous the cop was stopping riders at the bottom of Old Stage -- glad you didn't wreck or get a flat!

Fun seeing you and Michelle as always!!

Great job with 4th yesterday! I would've been pretty peeved about being stopped on the bike, but probably one of those things you can't let effect you while racing and just b*tch about later I guess. Kinda like the swim. I was going to stick around for the awards but I was so tired I just decided to get out of there. As always, nice work on the TZs!

Nice race Mark, even with th holdup. I got lucky and the cops waved me thru but I slowed as the scene there looked confusing and I wasn't sure that I could go or not.

Nice race, Mark!  Sucks that the 20 seconds from the podium may have been caused by the cop.  WTF..

Great race Mark!  Sounds like the bike was somewhat frustrating but "hitting the skids" could have been a disaster.  Nice working through it.  Congrats on winning the fuel belt!

Nice race! Getting stopped may have cost you unless the other guys also got stopped. The top 2 in your AG are in my tri club and tough to beat.
