Subject: BT Swim Challenge

In the spirit of the recent ride lots challenge and helping to motivate everyone to push themselves to new limits in training I'm proposing a swim challenge for the month of May.  I'm not sure how the ride lots challenge was organized but I believe it started with some trash talk and a challenge.  We don't have any trash talk here (yet) so the idea is for each BT'er to challenge themselves.  Set yourself a goal for the month of May (starting and including today, May 2) and go for it. If everyone PM's me their goal distance and weekly totals I will put together a list and do weekly updates.  If anyone has any ideas for prizes feel free to make suggestions.

I'll start the ball rolling...my goal is to swim 40km by May 31.

Just a suggestion Joel, but rather than have them PM you, have them officially commit in this thread. That way everyone can see who has taken on the challenge, but it also gives you ready access to their logs to be able to do the interim monitoring and give progress reports. All you would have to do is recall this thread, and go down the list checking logs for total swim distance.

Also, you'll get more guys involved if there's a promise of seeing some booty! Just not yours, OK?

Good idea Bear, thanks.  BTW, you must have hit the "post" button prematurely...I didn't see your goal there

Everyone post your goal to this thread.

Also looking for volunteers to show some skin for the cause...come on ladies, help motivate your fellow BT'ers!

  • The ride lots challenge stipulated that training mileage did not apply. With the swimming, do kickboard yards apply? What about yardage with fins?
  • The loser(s?) had to create a signature listing all winners as Stud o' the Month. And something about a cupcake. Not sure about that.
  • There was a minimum mileage/week that one had to meet.
  • I think Bear had to show a butt shot in his avatar if he lost; Kimmy likewise.

I'll commit to 7500 yds/week.

Oh, and you'll probably get more ladies involved if the men who don't meet their challenge change their avatar to a pic of them in their speedos. Just a thought.

I'm going for 17000 m/yds (I think my pool's metric) in May. My schedule is in hours, though, so that's kind of a guess. This is for any and all variety of mileage in the pool and if it ever gets warmer, some open water.

I'd say that anything you do as part of your workout counts.  I don't use kickboards personally, but my Masters group mixes in a lot of kick and paddle work with and without fins.  That being said it would be easy to pad your total with a lot of fin and board volume if all you want to do is post a big number.  I don't know about everyone else, but I don't care how many laps you post. This is a challenge to yourself to make you a better triathlete.  With open water season about here we'll have to be honest about that also...if you can't measure your distance covered then make a REASONABLE guesstimate...again, it's easy to cheat if you think it will impress someone.  As long as everyone sets a goal and works hard to reach it I can't see anyone being a looser.  However, I do understand the motivational power of a little something for those who do reach their goal.  If female puts in more yardage in the pool than me I'll gladly post a full-length Speedo shot...jammers that is.  I also like the idea of anyone not meeting their goal using a swim suit shot for their avatar for the month of June.  Now we need similar motivation for the men...anyone?

Speedo pic..we'll let the ladies weigh in as to whether posting it should be an incentive or a punishment! I'll follow the consensus.

How 'bout this? Boys vs Girls. Whoever has the greater percentage of participants meet their goal wins. Losing team has to post a recent full body swimsuit pic of themselves. I'm in for 16k.

Ixnay. I don't want to meet my goal AND pay the loser's price if the Girls Team has a lower % of meeting their goals. Float another idea.

I was going to challenge myself to 30km, but reading this makes me want to commit to more. I'll stick with the 30km, but my additional goal will be just to do more than you.

Well there's always the satisfaction of knowing you've set a goal and met it with the encouragement and support of your peers while simultaneously encouraging and supporting them in their pursuits.

Personally, I'd prefer the booty shot.
