P90X2 is definitely for real.  It's geared for athletic performance whereas the original p90x was geared toward more traditional strength training.  I've never been this strong core-wise in my life, and the final phase is an absolute monster.  I'm pretty excited to see what gains I've made when I hit the bike again this week.

I found P.A.P to be hard the first couple of workouts then my body was adapting so I had to start using heavy weights, I was using dumbells on all the plyo jumps. My legs are much stronger now. Im now back to P90x for another round. My living room looks empty now without all the x2 stuff!

I am not training for any tri right now so have all kinds of free time.  I have always been intrigued by P90X and have always done some kind of strength training so for my up coming birthday I decided to get it. Did Day 1 yesterday.  P90X sucks.   I have not been this sore in a long time, and sadly I know it will only get worse throughout the day.  I pity anyone who tries this thing and isn't in shape and hasn't strength trained before.

So during our tri training, we've incorporated the legs/back, arms/shoulders, and core syn. Welcome to the perpetual state of "ouch"!
It really is the perfect weight workout.

I'm doing my 2nd round of P90X Classic because I wasn't as committed as I should have been the first round. I'm visibly stronger in the upper body, but I didn't change my diet and missed a bunch of workouts due to circumstances beyond my control, so not the great results I was looking for.

Blanda,

Great that you are doing another round! Stick with it and you'll get the results you are looking for - I do have to say, however, that nutrition is KEY. You'll get stronger and fitter with the workout program, no doubt about that. But if you are looking to lose weight or change your body composition (e.g.,  lose fat), you'll have to focus on diet. The nutrition guide is very good and an excellent resource to get you focused and started.

Good luck! Feel free to ping me if you have any questions about how to adapt the program for crazy schedules (I travel a LOT and need to do this myself often) or about tweaking your diet.

I have 2 boys that are 15 & 17 that don't exercise, would this program work for them or would it be too hard?

I think P90X would be perfect for them both! Tony Horton does a great job of tailoring the workout to an individual skill and fitness level. Tell them to be prepared...they will be in a constant state of "OUCH!"

It's possible your boys may be bored with the Yoga X (it's 90 minutes of quiet but stressful moves) and the stretch. The other DVD's will be a lot of fun for them!

Lumbar Dad,

I agree with Cyndi - I think the boys would LOVE it, the entire "vibe" will be very appealing and motivating to them. I would suggest some supervision to start - make sure their form is good, that they aren't trying to over-reach either in terms of reps or weight to feel like tough guys, and even to cut the workouts in half to start. Doing "halfsies" is a VERY popular way to shorten the weight workouts - all of them are easily split in half in a natural way, as they either repeat sets (you simply FF through the repeated set), or go through all the sets in order, then go back to the top and repeat (here you skip to the cool down). I know a LOT of folks who use P90X this way and get great results. They should feel free to take additional rest days as well, if needed.

Feel free to message me with more specific questions - I'd be more than happy to help out, and if you decide to go for it, I could help with getting them started and keeping them on track etc.

Day 1 of P90x starts tomorrow for me at 430am!

How is it doing for you Tyler?  I noticed it's been a few weeks since your start.

I just made the P90X vegetable soup this evening and it is mmmmmmmm good.

I've been doing P90X since March and love it.  I ran my first 5K in July and only had about 5 total road runs.  The rest was Cardio X, and Plyometrics.  I am continuing to use P90X in my training for my first Triathlon next summer.  I started out at 252 lbs and now am about 210 and feel great.  You will do great, just push play, and don't give up.  It becomes addictive once you start seeing results.  Don't worry about your weight at all until after the first month, then it will start melting away.

Good luck and God Bless,

Todd

Started 3 days ago. I am SO sore, especially from trying to do the 50 zillion pushups and pull ups on day 1. I felt like I had the strength of a 3 year old by the end of the workout. Plyo was not bad at all thankfully. I like the plan so far, but I am not looking forward to the chest and back workout again!

I hate Mondays!!!  Back and Chest is so hard for me!  2nd time thru - at least I got to the second round before breaking down.  I finished all the exercises but it ws not pretty.

Curious to hear if others struggle as much as I do throught this routine?

Oh, it's brutal for sure!!!!! Don't feel badly about it - it's HARD. And just when you feel like you are really nailing it, you switch Phases and move onto C/S/T which is just .... crazy.

The thing I love about it is that it's so straightforward - push-ups, pull-ups. Old school. And it's easy to see progress from week to week, even if by the end you are one big noodle.

Great job!!!

Thanks for the motivation!

I still dread next Monday (diamond pushups... at the very end of the workout, really?!) but I can see and feel results from the 2 sessions already.  It's hard but strangely satisfying.

I remember feeling like WTF?????? after feeling pretty good after 3 weeks of C/B (that's my favorite P90X workout) - C/S/T is sadistic craziness.

Funny you said that, I felt pretty good this week (week 3) on C/B, we'll have to see about C/S/T, I'll consider myself warned!

OK I have to slightly disagree.  C/S/T was really tough, but C/B still takes the prize in my book!

I am in week 6 - havent missed a day yet, but I can see how easy it is to fall off the boat. 90 days doesnt seem like a long time, but it is.

There are some days that are so busy and other days that I am so unmotivated.  However, following the program day after day really reflects in the results and has kept me motivated.

I'll bet that in a couple of months once the program is over, I will look back and say "that wasnt so long/bad". So if you can over come your wierd funk and just keep pressing play, it will be over before you know it. (At least this is what I am telling myself)

Subject: P90x assessment for triathletes

I finished the 90 day program and thought I would give some observations from a triathletes perspective.  I am hoping others will give their opinions as well.

First a little background:  49yr old male. I started the program because I really needed to build some muscle.  Cardio, nutrition, and weight management were not a concern. I do a lot of cardio already, eat healthy, and feel like I am at or close to my ideal weight.

I continued with an S/B/R routine throughout the 90 days, usually an S/B/R workout in the AM and P90X after work.  After the 90 days, I gained about 5 lbs, all of it lean muscle.

The P90X cardio workouts (Plyo, Kempo) are a nice change of pace from S/B/R, but are not all that difficult for anyone who is in shape from tri training.  I really like Kempo as it gives the legs a break compared to most cardio exercises!

The Strength exercises (Shoulders, Back, Arms, Legs) were excellent for me (I really needed them).  Not only was I able to build muscle, but I feel that every workout contributed to an increase in triathlon performance.  This surprised me.  My legs are stronger on the bike, I am able to stay areo longer, my swim pull is soooo much better, and upper body strength contributed to running faster.

Core exercises (AB Ripper, Core Syn) also significantly improved my triathlon workouts. I feel a great deal of difference in my S/B/R, especially later in the workouts.  I was surprised how weak my core must have been. I now know I had a tired, sloppy form, but could not help it.  Now, my form does not break down when I am tired and it is a remarkable difference.

Yoga was different for me; I had never tried it before.  It is a hard enough workout, but Im not sure it contributes to the triathlon disciplines.  Maybe it made me more limber but I honestly dont feel much different.

So, I liked the program; think it is a great off season workout; Im glad it is over, and I still think the Chest and Back workout is ridiculously hard!
