Just seeing if there were important races/achievements or if you just bought it because you wanted to or saved up enough.

Bought it for a number of reasons. I did save up for around a year. I started tri's on a mtb and then progressed to a road bike then to a tri bike. I am a firm believer that in order to fully love the sport you must progress from the beginner to where ever you end up. Not saying that the people who outright buy a new 4000+ bike dont love the sport, but I think you have a deeper love if you progress to that bike. So after two years of doing tri's on a mtb and road bike I was able to not so happily sell my road and buy my tri bike off the bears hands.

I fell in love with the bikes and my husband got sick of hearing me say I wanted a BLUE so he bought it for me.

My wife coveted my bike ('06 QR Lucero) so I gave it to her forcing me to acquire a brand new one w/DA last summer. Her QR Tequilo flowed down to my daughter so everyone was happy. They're already hinting how much faster I'd be with the CD 0.1

Because it made practical sense to get one for doing tri's - HIMs and IMs.  Don't have a roadie, but don't need it.

I have a 20 year old Huffy road bike. It fits me well and I know every one of its idiosincracies (sp?).
I have only been doing this since Feb and the race I want to do well in is in Sept.
My intention is that if i complete that same race next year at the International level that then I will have earned my self a decent Tri bike.

 I won mine.

I went to the Great Lakes Multisport Expo in Milwaukee in Jan 2009... to beat the winter blues and to find some motivation.   I had never completed a tri but after getting bored with distance running, I wanted to get into the sport.   I had a road bike that I trained with and had planned to look at at tri bikes about 5-10 years down the road.  There was a raffle at the expo and I won the grand prize - an unbelievably sweet Specialized tri bike.  I know I'm not worthy but the thing's incredible.  I enjoy it immensely!

When: 4 years after getting into tris, I was getting faster...and wanted to bump my speed.

Why: Because of a combination of BT / ST advice that a tri-bike was necessary...which I found out later wasn't the case. You can go almost as fast on a roadie (which I had) which is a great option for 99% of us that aren't competing for a podium. I got caught up in the material hype, peer pressure, and believing that frame aerodynamics / tri position were absolute musts for decent performance. Not.

If I had to do it again, I'd buy a mid-level road bike. 99% of the benefit, versatility, and only one bike.

I was saving up for a Felt DA and I've always had a thing for this Canadian chick.  Well I happened to stop by my LBS for the usual tubes, CO2, Gels, and to shoot the breeze.  And there she was a 09 P2C used but barely and just sitting there lonely.  So I got her story and I asked what they wanted, bought her on the spot.

Here she is in her black dress(race wheels).

Won $60K on Jeopardy! last fall...otherwise I'd still be on my crappy entry-level Scott roadie.

I came back from overseas with some cash in my pocket and found a great deal online.
