Pre-race routine:

This was the race that got me started doing triathlons. It takes place on the lake I live on and the run goes a few hundred feet from my house. Last year, I decided to do this race in June and was totaly not prepared. My finish time was 2:39. After a year of training, I fully expected to crush this time this year.

I got up around 5:40, had some breakfast and just relaxed a little. This race is less than 1 mile from my house so I rode my bike and got there about 6:45. Got set up and just relaxed a bit.
Event warmup:

I swam for a little bit, I guess the bike ride over was a small warm up. Not big on warming up.
Swim
  • 15m 45s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

What? I am a SLOW swimmer. This took me 25 minutes last year. I had no idea I could finish this in 15:45, my goal was under 20. I just felt really great on this swim, I was passing people....I never pass people. This was a best case scenario swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I am very happy with this swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

My transition times continue to be so so at best. Nothing significant here, wetsuit came off easy, I'm just slow getting my shoes on and I always put on a shirt. Maybe I should get a tri suit that might save time.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to be faster here, not sure of specifics.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 55s
  • 18 miles
  • 17.73 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to hit the bike at 18MPH average. I missed that by 55 seconds so I am not totally unhappy with that, though accoring to my computer I did and the race length was actually 18.5 miles. Based on the amount of time I spend on the bike, I am happy with this bike time. If I am going to get faster, I need more riding time.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Nothing significant here other than trying to put socks on my still wet feet. I can't run 4.5 miles without socks.
What would you do differently?:

Not too sure.
Run
  • 46m 29s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

This is a tough run for me. Its hilly and on the longer side based on my current training levels. It did help to have my kids cheering me on by the house, they even made signs. I was hoping to just average right around 10 minute miles and I was right in ther so I am happy with this run performance.

What would you do differently?:

I need to run more miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Just relaxed, had some water and fruit and rode home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think this is the very first triathlon that I have done, out of 5 total, where I can't point to anything other than just my current level of conditioning. Based on where I am right now, this was as good as I could expect to do. My goal was beat my time last year by 30 minutes, I did that.

Event comments:

This is my favorite race, of course I am totally biased since it takes place on the lake I live on and I can ride my bike there. Next year, I am going sub 2 hours.

Congrats on the finish.  I have to ask you a question - did you run in with someone in a red tri jersey today?  If so, that was me that you were running with.

I didn't copy my times down and am waiting for the final results.  Congrats on besting your time last year by 30+ minutes.

Yep, that was me.  I was thinking after the race that perhaps that could have been you since you said this was your first tri.  Thats too funny.  You had a great race for your first tri, the results are up by the way.

Nice job on the hometown throwdown and besting your time by a huge amount!!  Did they close the bike to traffic this year or was it crowded again?
