Waukegan, Illinois

Capri Events
65F / 18C
Overcast
Total Time = 7h 00m
Overall Rank = 272/810
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 38/83
Pre-race routine:

Up early - Frosted Flakes and Gatorade; Starbucks Redeye
Event warmup:

Ride from parking to Transition; 100-150 m swim warmup; stretching
Swim
  • 13m 7s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Bike
  • 38m 37s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 20.51 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Didn't push too hard - wanted a good time, but wanted to have a good run. Most bike training has been distance - less than 10% of time on tri bike, and only a handful of bricks - probably need to do more of each
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Developed beginnings of a blister early in the week - had to add socks - which probably added 30 secs or so - but necessary!
Run
  • 31m 56s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Saw my son coming back from turnaround (he had started 15 minutes ahead) - wanted to catch him on the run - never saw him so was bummed.

Turned out he had to answer the call of nature - so I passed right by him
What would you do differently?:

As mentioned above - probably a few more transition runs or bricks - but was happy with sub 8/s for the run
Post race
Warm down:

Walking; 3 Recharges, water and a banana (The recharge isn't bad after the race - but during is a different story!) 3 mile jog to keep legs fresh; ice bath

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim is still weakest leg - but could have picked up a little time in the bike segment. I know my bike is part of the issue (my road bike is much better than the one I use for Tris) - but I wasn't sure if I'd like this sport - so didn't put much into the bike. That will change.

Transition runs and bricks would have helped

Event comments:

Capri Events puts on a good race. Yes - the access roads were bad, but that's the city, not Capri Events. My hometown race basically - 10 minutes to the course - so I'll probably keep trying to find this race on my schedule!

Way to go!  Your times are very good even though you said you held back a bit on the bike.  Congrats on a good race and good luck with training.  Your times are sure to improve once you start training and racing more.  Look forward to it!
