Heh..

I actually thought the post was pretty funny...definitely a gross generalization, but funny nevertheless...

Good job sticking up for us, tho!

Obviously he was a little nutty about having to swim away from his pool, but don't take it out on triathletes, and be a man about it!

using an abacus to count your laps is an excellent idea!! i never thought of that.  then again, it isn't that hard to count laps ,and if you get messed up by 50 or 100 yds, who cares. . it doesn't really matter.

I'll admit that I lost count today.  I know I did at least 750yds but it may have been 800.. I decided to error on the side of the lower number so that worst case, I'm more impressed with how much I improved the next time.  Laughing

I also thought the thread was tame. Most of the swimmers were actually very positive about their experiences with triathletes.

Funny stuff over there....I am new to the sport and I didn't realize all of the tension between the groups.  I'll have to keep a closer eye out the next time I go to the pool.....maybe I will get snubbed if my turn isn't perfect!!!

I swam competitively from age 5 to 18.  I just finally got back into swimming about a month ago after an 11 year break since I was busy, not into it and didn't have a local pool with access at time I could use it even though I did want to get back into the water many times over those years.

There is no pace clock where I swim.. heck they only have 3 out of 6 lanes setup and you can sometimes slip in a 4th before the old lady noodlers show up and take over. So I must wear a watch, yes it happens to be a timex ironman but it was the cheapest one I liked at walmart that day and it was before I even wanted to do an a tri (well I did back in Hs but didn't run at the time). No one there is doing circle swimming either. If you have more then one person in the lane its someone takes the left someone takes the right. This confused me for a bit but really since the next fastest person there probably is half my pace it works out when I have to double up.

As far as I know I am the only one training for a triathlon (my first is a sprint in october) and I am the only one not taking long breaks, not talking and I can count lanes in my head just fine

Its funny the older also former competitive swimmers like me are the ones that seem to be standing at the wall all the time. Bless them for getting in the pool at 6am and getting some exercise vs the majority of people not even opting to walk up some stairs instead of the elevator but certainly no one in my sessions at least is even trying but me.

I get the comments that people that aren't doing your thing can be annoying but I take it as that person wouldnt like the person just trying to get some exercise either and this time chose to just point out one bad apple that happened to be training for tris...

One comment from their circle swimming rant was I have never once in all my years swimming seen lanes alternate clockwise and counter clockwise.... circle swimming for all the teams I swam for over the years including some just being between season training "teams" always did stay to the right (counter clockwise) circle swimming. Maybe they are upset no one knows the rules because they made some of them up?

sorry if half this makes no sense.. sitting in the back seat on the way back to GA on a business trip from NJ.. just passing the time and getting motivated to get back to training tomorrow.

Wow, after reading that I am very grateful that I've had the luxury of living in SoCal where I have been training in my own lap pool and the ocean without the tension of worrying too much about lane sharing. There will come a time this winter, however, when I will have to venture over to the gym to get in my swim workouts. I didn't even know what I didn't know about swim etiquette!

Coming from a swimming background I can kinda relate to what some are saying, but it's still pretty retarded.  Triathletes are out there busting their as* to achieve a goal and that in itself should warrant any swimmer's respect.  Also, gotta love them bashing us on only front crawling.  The day I do an IM during my tri training is the day I see them hop out of the pool and bike 25 miles.

I ended up joining a Master swim class this year.  Many in the class are Triathletes and the coach occasionally holds "Tri" training.  No attitude from anyone. I am by far the worst swimmer in the group but I know the rules and stay out of the speedsters way.

So the runners hate us because we can swim and bike.  Bikers hate us because we can swim and run and swimmers hate us because we can bike and run.

That was a funny read.

Runners hate us because most are anorexic and they don;t have enough energy to be nice. I have yet to figure out how a roadie's mind work and likely never will. Swimmers spend all their time face down in a pool, so we just have to feel sorry for them.  Not that I'm being judgmental or anything....

Coming from a cycling backgroud I'm a little puzzled by that thread. I started doing tri because of a big triathlon event held by the local swim club (its big annual fund raiser).  I've never heard anything bad from local swimmers-in fact most seem to ENCOURAGE tri participation.  OTOH- "serious" local cyclists seem annoyed by triathletes, (even if they don't try to ride aerobars in pacelines).

Well guys, it could be worse.  Ever hear how different branches of the military speak to one another?  It shocks non-military folks who witness it for the first time.  Some even try to get in the middle to mediate but they quickly find themselves outgunned.  Just when people are taking cover or are calling security they hear, "hey, time for lunch... I'll drive."

It's a brotherly/sisterly thing.
