Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am. Usual breakfast. Packed up and left the house at 4:30am. Arrived at City Island a little before 5:30am. Checked in and set up in transition. I had about an hour to kill so I just walked around and chatted with folks.
Event warmup:

A short run from transition to the swim start. Not much really. I probably should have done either a longer run for a 20-30 minute bike ride considering how short the event is.
Swim
  • 15m 58s
  • 1300 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a very good swim for me. I lost the lead group early in the swim and swam alone most of the time. I was stuck in a postion where I was about a minute behind the lead group and a minute ahead of the next group.
What would you do differently?:

Try to stay with the lead group to draft. Might not have been about to do that anyway.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Good T1. Suit came off easy.
Bike
  • 35m 11s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 24.73 mile/hr
Comments:

The website says 14.5 miles but this is actually closer to 14 miles. I had a really nice bike ride and was hammering quite comfortably. One the way back, I took a wrong turn on the first bridge. I lost about 30-45 seconds before I realized the mistake. Turned my great bike into a minor disaster. Was averaging about 24.5mph until the mistake. Finished at just over 24mph. Actual bike time should be about 34:40
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention and not take a wrong turn.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

Good T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 17m 22s
  • 2.8 miles
  • 06m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

When I left T2, I saw several people within 1-2 minutes on the run. I started off with a fast pace and kept it going. I passed about 5-6 people and almost caught another 2. Add another 0.5 miles to the run and I would have caught them. The wrong turn on the bike cost me those two places. Overall, a very good run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really.
Post race
Warm down:

20 minute job around city island. I stuck around for the awards ceremony since I got second in my age group. Should have got first since the the 1st place guy was only 10 seconds ahead of me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wrong turn on the bike

Wow, great race. Sorry about the wrong turn, but don't feel too bad. I almost did the same thing but, as I was shoeless, I was going slow enough to veer back onto the course before it was too late.

great job.  Hope to join you at the front of the pack in a few years.  If the swim was really 300 yards longer than they say, i feel a lot better about my swim!

MikesGonnaTri - 2009-07-21 11:42 AM great job.  Hope to join you at the front of the pack in a few years.  If the swim was really 300 yards longer than they say, i feel a lot better about my swim!

If you use Satellite mapping, it seems impossible to me that the swim is only 0.6 miles.  Plus, the other triathlon they have on city island has the exact same swim and that one is 0.8 miles.   I don't know where they get their measurement from but I tend to trust mine better.   Plus, the bike is not 14.5 miles....it's closer to 14.

Great times...I can only dream of these times.  I WILL improve on the run and bike next year...the swim, well, its a lost cause.
