I'm signed up for my first Austin Triathlon! The only thing I've heard so far is that the bike course is less hectic than the Cap Tex, otherwise I'm in the same boat as you.

I think it is the same course as CapTex.  If that is true then it is a great course! I expect the water to be COLD.

Well, I guess that is subjective but I would guess it will be about 72 degrees.  I think CapTex this year was 69-70 degrees.

I'm considering the Oly distance as well. Have done 4 sprints now, so I guess it's time to buck up!

It's not quite the same as the CapTex course.  The swim goes out further West, the bike is 3 loops and includes a trip up S. Congress and this time you'll go up the little climb towards Lake Austin Drive (where Run Tex is), the run course is very similiar, but not exactly the same (I don't think).  The transition area is the basically the same--HUGE.  The water won't be "cold" unless something crazy happens--last year it was BARELY wetsuit legal, I think by about 1/2 a degree.  Jack and Adams does a great race though, should be fun. I'm in for the Olympic.

Thanks, this is helpful.  I sure hope the water is warmer.  I guess I am just a wuss... but I hated the temp of the water at CapTex.  I'm bad enough in the water without the temp taking my breath away.

Consider the time frames: Late May for CapTex, early September for Austin Tri. Makes a big difference in water temp. Unless we get TONS of rain and they let a bunch of water out of the bottom of Lake Travis, it probably won't even be wetsuit legal.

More rain? You imply there has been "some" rain...there has been some spitting, but I know not what this "rain" is of which you speak.

Actually, I was fairly shocked to see the Brazos at a good water level when I did TriWaco this last weekend. I expected it to be much lower.  N. Texas is getting some rain, but sure wish it would share here in Central Texas some more!

I'm in for the oly....rain would be nice...a run that's not as blazing hot as last year would be nice, too.  Here's hopin'!

Thanks!

I'm a natural athlete and ran cross country and track in college, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem when I get off the bike and need to run a 10K. I've been doing some bricks and feel good with that, but need to continue pushing it on the bike and then keep making progress in the water.

I am sure you will do awesome!  I think some people who are doing their first tri's are maybe comnig off the couch to a training program???  I am doing my first sprint this weekend but I have worked out/been active my entire life. Albeit I will probably not blow anyone away-I know I can do it easily. I actually pretty much do Olympic length training regularly. So, it depends on where you are coming from going into an event....you will be great!  Good luck and have fun!  I can't wait for mine!!!  I am doing the Olympic in Austin, too!  I can't wait for that event!!!  My husband and I just looked into tri's a couple of months ago at the mention from a friend-I am glad bc it renewed my love of endurance training-I love long bike rides!
