....triathletes and/or athletes who have an inspirational story to tell? I'm thinking of going to Borders tonight, and plan on picking up Chi Running (Did you hear that, AdventureBear?? haha )

In addition to a "how to" type book like that one....I want to read something *~inspiring~*. Something where an athlete/triathlete worked through issues....whatever they may have been...and kept moving forward to their goals...despite the obstacles.

I really enjoy hearing about others' stories, and it'll help me to stay motivated, as well. I noticed a few mentioned on this site, but wonder if you all have read any recently that you'd recommend? I used to be a book reviewer for a small newspaper here, and find these books to not only be entertaining...but they really do help!

Any titles you can think of that I might like?

i am really enjoying Working Out, Workining Within by Jerry Lynch

Not really about triathletes per se, but more about how to make the mind body connection pay off for both mind and body...kinda spiritual, along the lines of chi running....

That sounds good....I like books that cover all areas...not just getting around physical limitations, and so forth. Not sure if that's coming out right, but you know what I mean...thanks for the suggestion.

Paul Martin grew up in the town next to me, his book (One Man's Leg) is a pretty good read:

Ok, I'm very much a BOPer.  I find motivation in hearing the successed of other BOPer.  If you're aspiring to be a FOPer these probably wouldn't hold much appeal.

I am reading Be Iron-Fit : Time-Efficient Training Secrets for Ultimate Fitness
by Don Fink
I really like this book. Not because I am training for an IM (I am a long shot to do this) but because it has a lot of good information on how to be efective with limited training time. The book has plenty stories about pros and real people who took the IM challenge, how to balance life and training.
I am trining for an Oly and already got my money back on this book... who knows, maybe I'll get the inspiration to try an IM myself.

Some of my favorites over the years:

Once A Runner - John Parker's fictional story of a collegiate runners quest to be a world class middle distance runner. A "classic".

To the Edge: A Man, Death Valley, and the Mystery of Endurance - Kirk Johnson's (NY Times writer) introduction to the world of ultramarathons and his participation in Badwater. Very well written.

Gold in the Water - The story of the men training at a Santa Clara swim club to prepare for the 2000 Olympics. Another well written book about the sacrifices and determination it takes to compete at a world class level. Could be the book that inspires someone to meet their goals for the big swim challenge. ;-)

Running with the Buffaloes - A look inside the NCAA Champion University of Colorado cross country team with Adam Goucher.

Becoming an Ironman - A collection of essays describing first attempts at doing an Ironman. Features elites and AGers.

It's Not About the Bike - The first Lance book.

Happy reading.

"I run therefore I Am.....Nuts" by Bill Rogers.  It is a funny look at running with some great stories that have happened to all of us.

When Big Boys Tri by Michael Pate.  I've read it three times.  Being a "mega clydesdale" myself, it has been very inspirational, and it is funny as well.

"The cruelest miles" by the Salisbury. It is about a town Nome Alaska that gets an outbreak of diphtheria in 1925 and dog team relay is arranged in -60 temperatures to save the town. Its also good if you like to hear about the courage of our four legged furry friends.

Just got this book throught the library (cheap, I know, but I'm spending all my money on tri gear these days).  What an incredible read!  I've watched my daughter start competitive swimming at age 6 and barely able to make it to the end of the pool.  She's 8 now, and kicks my butt at every stroke.  I had tears in my eyes as I read about all the hard work and discipline that goes into swimming.

I have to second Michael Pate's book "When Big Boys Tri." I read that a year ago before I did my first tri and it's very inspirational no matter who you are or what shape you are in. It's a great book. Also, a great book to read is "The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life" by Amby Burfoot, "First Marathons" by Gail Waesche Kislevitz, and "Becoming an Ironman" by Kara Douglass Thom. The last three books have tons of inspirational stories from everyday folks like ourselves. I'm going to pick up Dean Karnazes' book "Ultramarathon Man" soon.

I definitely have to add "It's only a Mountain", by Sam Nall, about Dick and Rick Hoyt

Whenever I'm running out of energy, I think of them - http://www.teamhoyt.com/

Good dad, good kid, good works. We should all hope to accomplish as much.

This book is AWESOME, very inspiring. I met the author at the Chicago Tri a few years ago, she was just so moved by the people she interviewed for this book. Will make you contemplate trying for IM!
