Subject: heed vs. water when it's 85 and humid - strategy?
I'm doing the NJ State Oly on Sunday - my first Olympic - and my wave doesn't go off until 9:10am.  I'm not the fastest chick out there, so I suspect I'll be hitting the run course right around 11:00 - 11:15.  I'm expecting it to be about 80-85 and humid by the time I get to the run.  They'll have 8 aid stations on the run, each with water AND heed.  2 of those stations will also have hammer gel.

I plan to have Luna moons, water and powerade on my bike, as well.   Should I alternate?  Drink water, next drink, powerade, next drink water... or should I take in more powerade than water?

My plan is to drink a 5 hour energy right before the start, say 9:00am.   Mid-way through the bike I'll do a packet of Luna moons in addition to any drinking I do.  I'll have another packet of moons available at T2 in case I need it.  So... given that... how much of WHAT would you suggest I plan to drink?  More powerade than water?  More water than powerade?   An even split?

Thanks SO MUCH for you advice!

What have you been practicing in training?  No reason you should be straying too far from that.

Edit to add.... Personally I would tend toward limiting plain water intake.  I'd rely primarily on sports drink for your fluids and only use water to chase solid food and gels.  Too much plain water and you'll just be diluting the needed electrolytes from your sports drink.

WOW. That just sounds like a lot of intake for an Oly in general.

I peronsally would just eat the Luna moons, do the sports drink on the bike, and do water on the run unless I felt like drinking the Heed.

definitely sports drink on the bike.  I did water only on the bike last year and had some cramping on the run.  Once you start the run I think some sports drink is okay...just depends how you're body handles the sloshing around of heed in your stomach.

KSH - 2009-07-23 1:05 PM WOW. That just sounds like a lot of intake for an Oly in general.

Maybe I wasn't very clear, then.   The only "given" is the 5 hour energy at the start, and then a pack of Luna moons on the bike, halfway through (or so).   I'll have lots of liquids available, but was just wondering which would be most beneficial.

I've been lucky with the weather and my training has really only been done with water.  It hasn't been very hot or humid for my long runs.  Last weekend I ran out of water and my quads were starting to bother me a little because it was hot and humid for the first time, which is what made me a bit nervous for this race once I found out I won't be going off until 9:10.  I'm not used to being out that late and having it get that hot and humid.

Let me simplify my question:   If, when I drink, I only drink sports drink, is there a downside?   Do  I need to make sure some of it is water, or can it be all sportsdrink?

i would be worried about not having my tummy used to sloshing around with all that sugary stuff in it...stick to water if that's all you know...just don't run out!!!

I've used sports drinks, but never actually Heed.  Is it much different?

Not sure. But you know what they say, nothing new on race day.

I train in a lot of heat (running in 100 degree heat!) ... and I generally stick to water and Gu's. The Gu's give me what a sports drink would and the water keeps me hydrated. I can't drink a lot while riding or running or my tummy will get sloshy.

If you haven't done Heed before, you should probably make water your main source of hydration with a little Heed along the way.

If Heed is similar to Infinit (a mixed sports drink made for nutrition)... then you should mix water with it.

Yah Heed tastes like yuck time 2 or maybe 20. I can't stand it and have 2 big jugs of it in my basement. Hammer is a great sponsor of triathlons and donates product to races so race directors use it since it is free. I love hammer gels but don't like Heed. Often it gets mixed at wrong concentration so I'm always leary of using it in a race.

Really nothing new on race day. If you haven't trained with Heed I would not recommend drinking it race day.

My suggestion is go with water on the run and whatever else you are used to for calories/sodium if need be like the luna moons on the run.

yes, the ingredients are different.  I know Powerade's primary ingredient is High-Fructose Corn Syrup, which if you do a quick search, you will find there is much debate on.  Heed doesn't use HFC but maltodextrin instead (different type of sugar, easily digestable) and seems to have a more electrolytes than Powerade.  Like the above poster said, you're better off sticking with something you know, rather than experimenting and risking an upset stomach.

You guys ROCK.  Thanks.  I guess I'll avoid the heed since I've never tried it, I'll stick with moons, water, my own sports drink on the bike, and if I really need it towards the end, grab a hammer gel on the run.

Take what you're used to on the bike and you should be OK for the run. I am doing this race too and I think it's my first race ever that doesn't have Gatorade on the course (Gatorade is my drink of choice). I just plan on taking in G'ade & water on the bike and see what happens (plus GU). I typically am fine with just water on the run, but I think if my body really needs something then I will take the HEED and should be OK. I'll probably carry a gel or something with me too...just in case. I've been fortunate enough to never race in hot and humid either (well, I did a sprint like that once), so I can't say for sure, but I think proper nutrition/hydration on the bike should carry you through the run just fine.

Good luck. See you out there!
