I just created a new entry for this race that used to be named the Santa Cruz Sentinel Triathlon.  Anyone else planning on doing it?

I'm doing an OW swim in Santa Cruz this weekend - to sorta test the waters. If it goes ok and I don't feel freaked out by swimming in the ocean, I'll probably sign up.

That's pretty cool!  Where are you going?  I usually go to Cowell Beach, on the right hand side of the SC Municipal Pier.  Anyway, have fun (and more importantly be safe) with your ocean swim Wink

I did this race last year (signed up again this yr) and its a blast!  Quick and easy...fun and pretty organized.  Its sold out so not sure if you signed up already, but the swim is easy by the pier, then its a short jog to the transition area...a few blocks (some people had flip flops when they got out, I didnt).  Once recommendation is NOT to set up your transition by the wading pools - some stuff got fully saturated last yr when everyone was cleaning off.  I will probably bring my own clean water to wash the feet off....

Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your advice.  Very useful!

Regarding the flipflops, would you recommend them?

Thanks,

Davide

personally i wouldnt recommend flip flops ---IMO you are wet, lightly jogging to the transition (might even be close to a 1/4 mile), flip flops are an accident waiting to happen....slip, twist your ankle....the street/sidewalk were fine last year and I have tough feet so I wont be using them!

see ya there!

how'd you do Davide?  Did you have a GPS on?  I clocked the run at 3.44 miles...made my pace time look slower on the results....i ended up at 1:29...pretty much the same as last yr...oh well good time overall!

Looks like there has been a misunderstanding here This is the official thread of the Santa Cruz Triathlon (http://www.santacruztriathlon.org), formerly known as the Santa Cruz Sentinel Triathlon, while you have raced the Santa Cruz Sprint Triathlon (http://www.finishlineproduction.com/events/SCSprint/SCSprint2009.html). BTW, congratulations on your strong finish! Very good job.Davide

I did this race last year (my first triathlon) and I've been hooked ever since.  I grew up in the area and my parents still live there.  I'll be traveling up again from San Diego this year to race.

The swim is great.  Sighting is no problem with the wharf as a guideline.  The water is a bit cold, but that's what wetsuits are for, right?

It's not a closed bike course, but there are police officers at all intersections and there are safety marshals out on highway 1, cruising the couse on motorcycles.  The issue for the bike could be wind.  It gets a bit breezy on the way up to Davenport, but it will depend on the day.  It usually picks up more in the afternoon and I really didn't notice it much last year (but I did struggle through it on my late-afternoon training rides).  If there is wind, it will be helping on the way back.

The only sketchy area is a 1-mile out-and-back section through the Long Marine Lab.  Last year, they said it was going to be paved over, so perhaps it's better now, but there were a lot of flats there (and out along the coast) last year.  I got into a collision with another rider right as we were coming out of LML (my bad - covering his rear wheel on the right, and he veered over, cutting me off.  I couldn't right the ship and spilled out onto Delaware ave right by the entrance to the motor home park.  When I got up to go, I noticed I was pretty banged up, but still good to go.  The wide-eyed volunteer asked if I was O.K., then told me I had lost my water bottle.  I went back for it and when I turned back around, I flatted out on the rear tire.  Bummer.  I did a fairly quick change and was back on the road shortly.

The run is awesome.  It's an out-and-back along the walking path on West Cliff Dr.  Again, not a closed course.  There are walkers and joggers out on the path and you have to negotiate the traffic.

Hey halfironmike,

Thanks for sharing that very useful info about the race and that nice pic of the SC Municipal Pier.  Let's just hope no one gets scooped up by a shark.  Last week a great white has been sighted in the area and as a result a bunch of beaches  have been closed.

Cheers,

Davide

PS - Looks like you and I are doing the same races (I'm still on the fence regarding IMCDA because of a potential conflict with my family vacation plans, but it's probably sold out now...)

Am debating about this one . wondering if anyone's interested in doing a group swim to test out the course ?

Haven't been swimming as much as I'd like to and haven't gotten around to do any OWS this season so ... on the fence currently ...

Will be driving up tomorrow (Friday) and previewing the course on Sat.  Probably drive the bike course since my friends haven't done the race before.  Packet pickup, bike the run and go for a dip on the Cowell's side of the wharf.  Sounds like the weather is going to be great.  Water temps...eh...a bit chilly.  Did full Gatorman (3 miles, no wetsuit) here in San Diego on Sunday.  Water temp was 72.5°.  Might be a bit cooler in SC this weekend?

So how did everyone do?

I was 26, 3, 1:06, 2, 41 = 2:18.  Overcame the crash and flat from last year with a big PR, so I can't complain.  This is a very competitive race.  Is it a club championship event or something?  I was surprised to see some of the crazy fast times (both of the past two years).

Friends and training buds all had good races, too!  It was perfect running weather, that's for sure.  Water was a bit cold, but it didn't really bother me.  We went out on Saturday to test it out ahead of time and I didn't end up wearing the neoprene hoodie that I had packed.

Good job halfironmike! I did my Olympic Distance PR too: 28:10/3:35/1:07:24/1:45/41:32 => 2:22:27. I sucked a bit in the swim, but the rest was decent. I too was surprised by the competitiveness of this race: Everyone was just hammering like crazy. Next year I'll definitely do the Big Kahuna, which shares half of its course with this race. Absolutely worth it!

@Kevin26.2: I'm in too.  Did it last year and I loved it!

@Chatagirl: Congrats on your first tri!  You're going to have a blast!

I'll ask the BT site admin to create the "2010" instance for this race because it doesn't show up on the race listings.
