I completed my first 70.3 last week (Vineman) and I immediately felt the urge to enlist for another one, so here I am.  Just wanted to say hi to my fellow BTers planning on doing the 70.3 CA!

I'm also signed up.  I did this race in 2003 (my only HIM to date) and I was grossly underprepared for the bike, but will be better trained this time around.  It was a tough bike.  At least for me.

I am not planning to follow an "official" training program, because my life just doesn't lend itself to anything that structured.  I just try to swim, bike and run and do Crossfit as much as I can fit into a week and at a volume that still keeps my relationships intact.  I am also signed up for the Magic Mountain Man HIM in October and the training for that will definitely give me a big jumpstart on California 70.3.

Good luck everyone.  I know that there is no way to preview the course, but perhaps closer to the race we can go on a surrogate practice bike and/or run.  Just a thought.

I did it this year, and I'm in again for 2010.

The swim is not really an open-ocean swim.  It's an out-and-back in the Oceanside Harbor and most of the swim is protected by the jetty.  The only real issues are the temps (58° this year) and the distance (for those not used to swimming more than a mile).  It's pretty easy to sight the buoys on the way out and you can use the jetty for reference on the way back.  When I was coming back, the sun was just rising above the horizon and visibility straight ahead was nonexistant.  I just had to trust the splashes in front of me and take a look at the jetty from time to time (it's on the right and I breath / sight to the left).  I was very nervous about the swim heading into the race and it was really not that bad.  It's a wave start and you swim out about 100 meters from the boat launch to get to the staging area, so it gives you a nice warm-up before the horn sounds.

The bike does have two pretty considerable hills, but other than that, it's pretty manageable.

The out-and-back (twice) run couldn't be flatter.  There is a section where you have to run across the sand and that can be annoying, but it's all just part of it.  There are two slight inclines on the run, but they're short (~1 block long).

I just got back from the HIM in Lake Stevens and that was a tough run course!  I don't want to say that the Oceanside run is easy 'cause I can definitely recall looking forward to the end (even on the first loop), but it's manageable.

Good luck to everyone!

Hoping that some of these pics will help those concerned about the ocean swim. As you can see it's a very well supported event.

Thanks for posting the photos HalfironMike!  The swim is my biggest concern.

I was wondering if anyone has the scoop about how fast this race is filling up.  I have two friends who are thinking about signing up for it and I don't want them to get shut out.  I thought if I told them last year's sell out date or where the race is this year they might do it a little sooner.

I'm pretty sure I heard about this year's race filling up in October of last year, so  I went and signed up that very day.  It was sold out shortly thereafter.

The 2009 race filled up around late December.  This is an amazing 70.3.  For those of you who are on the fence, go for it.  Out of the 7 70.3 races I have done, this was my favorite.

Yup, this is what I remember, people swimming in all directions, note how many swimmers are vertical in this pic! Didn't realize it at the time but the bouys change colors at the halfway point, I wish I had known this, the sun was soo bad it completely threw off my bearings and pacing.

Yeah, the sun was brutal once you made the turn.  Heading back on the swim, you just had to trust the swimmers in front of you and use the jetty as a guide. Visibility was near zero, looking straight into the sun.

By the by, I have a pretty good written description of the bike course, written by a friend's coach (since you can't ride it).  Pretty decent document.  PM me your email address and I'll forward it along.

Any of you folks living in or around orange county that want to do some long training rides or swim for this race?  This is my first HIM and am still building my base in both events.
