Pre-race routine:

Drove up with Daniel. Got up at 5:45 and got moving. Loaded bikes in the trunk of the car (that was interesting... but effective). Grabbed gas and a Gatorade at Casey's in Beatrice. Bought a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit at McD's. Arrived, watched the end of the 1k race. Checked in, numbers on, over to swim area.
Event warmup:

Began warm-up 25 min. before scheduled start time. Walked 8 minutes, stretched out, walked some more, went to race meeting, swam a little to get used to the water.

Comments:

Good first open-water swim. Shawn Hostetler and his family were there. Decent moral support. Shawn swam beside me until about 250m in. Then I kept bumping him, so breathed on my left side facing him to avoid him. Should have attempted to draft. Ended up gulping in some water from his waves. Let him go on ahead. Felt good on the 300m homestretch, and began to kick it. Not as good on navigation when kicking it.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation. Drafting on Shawn.

Warm down:

Not much. Walked some. Road 1.5 miles with Daniel following his race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience.

Event comments:

Good experience. I liked having the awards immediately following each race.
