58.9, Caron Pass, Deathride 2009. Would have been faster, but I had a cross-wind.

43.8 this past Saturday on the last day of RAGBRAI.  And I know it would have gone faster had I either 1) started out faster at the top and 2) not had to do a 90 degree left at the bottom.  Computer was still going up when I finally sat up, dropped the chute and started to mash the brakes (I waited till the last possible second).

OOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooo  what a rush!!!!!

36.8 on a flat.

45 on a hill.

Not my favorite thing going down hill.  It is funny, but 38.8 on a flat seems much slower then 36.8 going downhill.

Just shy of 55 mph on the descent into Keene at IMLP in 2006. I was surprised how many people were sitting up and even braking. That was a blast.

We had a trail we used to ride a couple of times a month until I moved.  Once we hit the paved road at the end of the trail it became a race to the bottom of the mountain.  We would regularly do 50-60 on the steepest/straightest part of the road.  The speed limit was 35 so it was great screaming past the cars.  One thing I learned is that you don't sit in the saddle at that speed.  The slightest bump in the road could bounce you out of the seat with those balloon mountain bike tires.

tjfry - 2009-07-25 9:04 PM I hit 60 once with the chest on the bars on a downhill west of Austin (2222 heading east from lake travis for those who live there.) It took many times down that hill (long and straight) before I could put it all together (no braking, chest on the bars, etc.). Ironically, when I got it, some stoner drove up next to me in his beat up Datsun, rolled down the window and yelled, " Dude, your doin like 60 mph! That's awesome!" I sat up shorty after, partly laughing that someone decided to try and 'chat' with me in that tense moment.  Certainly wouldn't try that on uncharted road or with company like they do in the tour.

Funny I live in Virginia but my fastest speed is 58 on the same hill, feathering the brakes and trying not to wet myself..I love that loop from 2222, 360 back to 620 and the climb up from the dam at lake travis is epic..

I think I've topped out at 41 mph, which is plenty. At that point, the wind, road vibrations, and threat of serious bodily injury if I make the slightest error are enough to keep me feathering the brakes. That said, I love (moderately) fast descents (in the 35 mph range).

Add me to the group for the damn loop on 2222. I only hit 53, I guess I need to get a little bit lower in the aero position or hold onto the pursuits and get the chest down.

+1 on that freakin hill heading north from the dam.

does terminal velocity from riding to splatted on asphalt count?

I've hit 38 mph on a downhill on my mountain bike the disc brakes and fat tires allow a little more confidence. On my Tri bike I have hit 35 mph only in the horns, I have to second and third and fourth some of the others little tires and to me little brakes are a bit scary at this point at high speeds.  I'm sure my 15 mph road rash experience plays into this.

Fastest so far was 42+ on my mtn bike with slicks screwing around on a back road near my house. I hit 37+ today on my new roadie when I realized that my turn was right there! and I had to hit the brakes pretty hard. There's a hill on the way back to my house that I would LOVE to bomb except it has tons of loose gravel and there's a turn through the loose gravel at the bottom. Ugh. Brakes, brakes, brakes for that one.

x2 on wanting disc brakes for the roadie. Oh, and BMX gear.

Who needs disc brakes?  Maybe on a long mountain descent that would otherwise overheat your rims or in the rain...  I can easily lock up the wheels on my low end Shimano dual-pivot brakes.  More practice braking and more practice cornering at speed will help out.

Disk brakes stay cleaner and work better then braking against the rims when you are riding through dirt and mud and water.  They're great for a mountain bike.  I can see that there isn't as much of a need for them on a road or tri bike.

Somewhere in the low to mid 40's for me, on a steep hill just outside of Pittsburgh.  My husband had the bike computer and topped out at 42.5 -- I don't have a computer, but I know I caught him by the bottom of the hill and he'd started out with about a quarter-mile lead on me

I once hit 54 going down a mountain near Keystone, Colorado, before getting on the brakes out of fear for my life. That's intense! And then at Horribly Hilly Hundreds last month I was following my friend Mike and we hit 47.5 on one of the hills as we rounded a sweeping corner. I saw him, about 1/8 mile ahead of me, go into the corner and disappear. I had no idea how sharp the corner was but I remember thinking `Well if he went into the trees, I'm going into the trees. Nothing I can do about it now.'

My old neighbor, a pro who does a few stages of the TDF before the event actually comes through as a tour guide for rich people, said a couple years ago he and his buddy were going down the Alps and neither would be the first to back off. He said they topped out at 68 mph. I didn't see it so I can't confirm it but I wouldn't put it past him to do that. Crazy effers.

36.5MPH about a month ago. Passed the speed limit sign on a back road leading to Frederick, MD that said 30MPH. No police presence so I was safe... The only scary part was the blind hairpin right turn at the bottom, I hit the turn at 35MPH. That was the real thrill.

that's 'cause I stopped at the bottom to wait for y'all ;-p

I also had the advantage of riding my hybrid, which is probably as heavy as the three of y'all's bikes put together....
