On downhills my cycle computer is often getting up towards 70 kph and has gone just over a few times, but that's only low 40's in mph. A couple of months ago, I did have a car load of what appeared to be college athletes, with a bullhorn, pull up beside, and tell me I was doing over 50 (~30mph). That was on a flat section but with a good tailwind.

Hello

Columbia, SC  Tour de Cure, June 09

39 mph going down hill and scared to death. Never again will I peddle down a huge hill.

Humm?  If I was racing would I do it?  No
All I could think about was tuck-duck and roll if I fall.

56 mph ... on a tandem ... down hill ... white knuckled ... feathering the brakes ... wife screaming, whahooo!

haha thats awesome.

I've only hit about 46 in IMWI but I was tapping the breaks because the downhill was really windy...I'm feeling the need for some speed right now!

How sick would that be to hit 60 on a bike...

MacMadame - 2009-07-25 11:34 PM Sometimes my bike computer claims I've done 65.9. It's lying. It's some weird bug that happens when I am standing still.

My highest believable speed was 39.7 mph.

My fastest is 52 mph.   I once was checking my computer and it said I hit 400mph.  I was wondering why my eyes were dry and clothes were missing.

My fastest is 51.5 in a race before I hit the next up.  Medium length down hill with a tail wind.  It's hard to find anything long enough to push faster before you hit the next up hill.  Where I live in Germany is all hills, but none are really long enough to go faster.  I'm always trying to get faster on every down hill no matter how long or short it is.

You are crazy.  I hit 45 on my road bike before I freaked and started braking before I got to the bottom.  Then I had to climb back up the same hill.

50 down Burnt Mtn near Big Canoe, Georgia. Was an awesome rush. Would have gone faster but a spoke broke coming into a turn- hit the pavement and went straight to the hospital. Now, I'm white knuckle, terrified on decents and don't take my chances. It's just not worth it to me anymore

37 mph downhill on southern Ohio hills on my clunky hybrid.  4 months ago I was still bike-phobic and scared to ride off the trainer.  So cool, hearing all this - let's me imagine what I could do if I had a real bike.  At least now I'm not so terrified that I ride the brakes all the way down!

52.3 going down one of the many hills at Horrible Hilly Hundreds.  I was aero, but I did come up on the horns after the front wheel started to wobble.   After thant, I have decided that there is no longer any need to go faster than 50+.

I hit 47 on a downhill in the NYC tri last year. I didn't look at my computer during the descent, so I didn't find out until later when I downloaded my Garmin. I'm glad I didn't know at the time.

37 in the florida keys though... its really flat, but i did have a nice tailwind!

On a side note, passing the little scooters around here while they are going 25 and you hammer by at 32 or so is pretty cool, especially moving into the "fast" lane to pass them

Somewhere in the low-40's - 42 or 43? is the fastest ever for me.  It's kind of strange I've never gone faster, because with the hills around here, I hit 35-40 on just about every ride.

After a while, you get used to the feeling of riding with wet pants.

I stopped looking down at my computer after hitting 55 mph (and accelerating) riding down a long hill from Red Rock Amphitheatre in Morrison Colorado.  I would put it at close to 60mph.  Maybe just over 60.

Wow, these times are fast.  I completed my first triathlon in late June riding a Trek hybrid bike, the computer read 33 mph.  I just picked up a 2010 Trek 2.1 on Saturday but wasn't able to put any time on it.  After reading these posts, I am excited to see what speeds I can put on it.
