Well for anyone that knows me the answer is yes....but anyway...I did my 3rd ride yesterday (3rd ever since I was 12) I did 10miles with some pretty big hills (for foothills VA) I pretty much kept an 80-85 cadence (except on the big hills).....I am thinking of Sunday riding to my parents house that is 21miles away (all country roads). I would do it at a more liesurly pace. Think this is doable or not advisable.

How do you feel today? If your legs aren't hurting too bad, go for it.

With all due respect for the 10% rule, I think you're pretty safe increasing distance on the bike as long as you keep a reasonable pace. I jumped from 12 mile rides to 26 w/o any trouble, but I was careful not to push too hard.

My legs feel good. The one hurts but that is because I got hit by a 87mph fastball the night before last and it is a nice shade of black blue and green...

Legs?  More importantly, how does your backside feel?  Getting used to sitting on the little triangle shaped brick that manufacturers so quaintly call a "seat" is the biggest limiter to adding distance and frequency of riding for me.

You said you did a 10 miler last night, what about your other two rides? How far were they? What about effort? Did you really push it last night and the other rides or just take it easy? Do you think you could do another 10 miler on the same course today? What's your general fitness level coming into riding? Are you a converting couch-potato or an avid swimmer/ runner coming into triathlon? The answers to these questions will give you the answer to your main question.

It's doable...if you don't mind paying the price.

The price? Since you've only ridden three times, you're gonna have a sore bum and possibly lower back. Depending on the route, you may have some sore legs as well. And, there's the chance of a longer ride like this causing an injury, minor or major, because you may not be as prepared as you should be.

The reward? A great sense of accomplishment and an attitudnal upgrade that says, "Hey! I can do this."

Ultimately, it's your decision as to how far to go and how fast to get there. These are just the factors that you'll have to use to weigh that decision.

When I started bike training I rode 10 miles the first time I had ridden a bike in years. Two days later I rode 20 miles and felt fine. Now I'm riding 30 miles regularly and have only been training for a few weeks now. I haven't had any problems, it's pretty amazing how fast your body develops with consistent training. I would just ride as much as you feel your body can handle.

I rode pretty hard last night...Like I said kept an 80-85 avg cadence for the entire time. My butt legs and back feel fine. I was NOT an avid swimmer/runner etc...however I have played baseball (NOT SOFTBALL) my entire life and am in baseball shape. I catch so my legs are pretty strong anyway. Heck I do more squats in one week then most people do in a year (granted with only my body weight and gear but still) I think if I slow down to a 65-70 cdc and coast some on the downhills long straights I can make it. But then again I have never tried to ride that far. So really if it is one of those "double the distance" I think I will be fine...But if it is one of those actual double distance but triple the effort Im not so sure.

Don't change your cadence. Your cadence should stay the same or even go up a little. Change your gear and ride easier.

You might be better off with a higher cadence and a lower gear than trying to muscle through at a lower cadence.

Think you will be fine, 21 miles isn't RAAM, that's where I expect my couch potatoes to be when we start century training.  you probably will have more pain in your sit bones than in your muscles.

Your last ride was 10 miles total? and your parents live 21 miles one way? So you're going from 10 to 42? Oh, it can be done, but get ready to have a sore butt.
Unless someone is driving you home and you didn't say so - in which case, tough redneck, baseball 'rasslin boy such as yourself should have no problem. Just pace yourself and watch your gears.

I'd go for it, but I'd also do two things:

1) Have a ride home arranged (10 -> 21 not too bad. 10->42 you might suffer on the way home).

2) Take along a cell phone to call for backup in case you bonk or have a mechanical.

Squats happen to be excellent cross-training for the bike, so you're probably in better bike shape than you otherwise would be.

I don't think I'd try the round trip, but I'd go for the one way.

And the others are right. If you don't have a sore butt after the ride, keep that seat forever!

Oh, and DO keep your cadence UP. It'll shift more of the work to your cardio system and save your legs a bit.

Good luck!!

I think it's a great idea, but take a cell phone, two bottles of liquids (one or both with gatorade or equivalent), your standard bike repair kit and some bandaids & disinfectant wipe packets (stash them in your kit).  It's good to have the first aid with you anyway.

Also, let your family know what route you're taking, when you expect to be there and to keep a phone nearby.  The ride will be much more enjoyable knowing you have backups.  I'd also grab a powerade gel (I love strawberry banana) from the bike store so you can suck it down halfway through.  Though you should be able to get by without eating on this ride, that little energy boost halfway through will make you feel MUCH better on the last 5 miles.

Happy riding!
